The wonderful white terrain that surrounds Cooke City is both wild and scenic. The snowfall in this area is very reliable and skiing objectives are extensive.

This makes the mountains around Cooke City accessible for everyone, whether you’re fresh on the slopes or a seasoned skier.

We’ll check out the great powder stashes that are clumped and dumped on the slopes surrounding the city, whether it’s Sheep Creek, Hayden or Republic.

The routes vary from steady tree skiing to steep bowls and challenging couloir skiing. There are steep chutes in the Gallatin National Forest, and big lines in the Beartooths that are reminiscent of Alaska. There are routes to suit all types of skier.

During the winter months, there’s just one road that connects Cooke City to the outside world, it winds through the wilderness of the Yellowstone National Park, and careful of the wandering bison that veer onto the tarmac.

Cooke City was first known as a snowmobiler’s paradise, given its vast wild slopes blanketed in snow. Yet its limited zone of exploration means there are thousands of acres of ski-only terrain. This is where we’ll be exploring.
