Conquer one of Japan’s classic alpine climbs!
Starting and finishing in Kamikochi, with the summit of Maehotaka as our goal. Spend two days climbing beginner-level rock climbing and exploring stunning mountain landscapes.
We’ll start with a six-hour trek to Karasawa, where we’ll rest overnight at a comfortable mountain hut.
The next day, we’ll start our climb before dawn, at 3 AM, aiming to reach the summit of Maehotaka by 8 AM. Then, we’ll descend to Kamikochi in about five hours, completing this challenging yet rewarding journey.
This alpine route, famous for its beauty and tranquility, is not a crowded trail. The North Ridge has spectacular sunrise views as we climb along the eastern face of the mountain. Over two days, we’ll cover an elevation difference of 1600 meters, walking on rocky terrain for 6-8 hours daily.
While prior experience in rock climbing isn’t necessary, a solid level of physical stamina and familiarity with mountain terrain is important for this route.
If you want a beginner friendly mountain adventure the Maehotaka North Ridge is the perfect choice —let’s climb it together!

He was fantastic. There was a lot of bad weather rolling through, he was very accommodating to adjust times and the date to make sure we got it in. He hit every item on our list of requests and was even prepared to stay longer, but we were spent. I would absolutely recommend him for any climbing adventure.

Kenji was delightful and inspired confidence. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side, and the rock was very wet. On a dry day this would be a simply beautiful climb. However he more than made up for it by taking us on a longer hike, and when the sun finally came out went out of his way to drive us to the best viewpoints to see Fuji. He also shared his delicious ginger tea with us when we got cold and wet! I’d certainly recommend him and this climb, but on a dry day.
