This 3-day trek (with an optional 1–2 day extension) on the Ōmine Okugake-michi — a remote and sacred section of the Kumano Kodo World Heritage network — leads you through ancient forests, rugged ridgelines, and spiritual landmarks still used by yamabushi (mountain ascetics) for intensive training.
Celebrated for its remoteness, tranquility, and profound cultural significance, this trail offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from modern life and immerse yourself in Japan’s spiritual and natural heritage. Expect long, demanding days — often over 10 hours of hiking a day— with rocky, uneven, and occasionally technical terrain. Strong endurance and surefootedness are essential. Your guide will ensure safety while providing rich cultural and historical context throughout the journey.
Please note: This route includes Japan’s only officially restricted zone for women — Mount Ōmine and Ōminesanji Temple. For female participants, the itinerary will be respectfully adapted to avoid this area while preserving the core spiritual and scenic highlights of the experience.
Ideal for experienced hikers seeking a physically challenging, culturally immersive pilgrimage through Japan’s sacred mountain heartland. Due to the limited availability of mountain huts, monk lodges, and emergency shelters, participant screening will be conducted prior to booking confirmation to ensure safety and preparedness.

• Full-day alpine hike along the Okugake trail (~12 hours) • Overnight at Misen Goya Hut or emergency refuge, depending on progress and weather
• Another long day (~12 hours) through rugged, sacred terrain • Descend into Zenki — a spiritual village known as the home of an oni (devil) descendant • Depending on group condition, return to Tenkawa Village for the final night or departure
Accommodation
You’ll stay in a monk’s lodge, sleep in a rustic mountain hut, and spend a night in the home of a family said to descend from a mythical Oni.
