Description

Join me on this guided alpine trekking tour in the Bavarian Alps, a unique 9-day mountain journey, from refuge to refuge, in the beautiful Berchtesgaden National Park.

Located in the southwest of Germany, on the border with Austria, the park is close to the town of Berchtesgaden. It was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1990 and it is the only National Park in the German Alps.

During this "eco-detox" trip, we will stay in ecological shelters, built with the latest advances in environmental management. This is also a great opportunity to really disconnect, as we will be hiking on routes and refuges with no Wi-Fi nor mobile coverage most of the time.

This hiking tour takes us through a wonderful mountain setting, a spectacular alpine environment, hard to appreciate in other alpine areas. The Berchtesgaden National Park is not only interesting because of its wild nature and peaks with vertical walls, such as the Watzmann (2713 m), but also for the culture, traditions and gastronomy that are still very much alive in the daily life of the Bavarian people in this area, in most of their towns and mountain refuges.

We will stay in different mountain shelters within the Berchtesgaden National Park. They are ancient huts of traditional shepherds, renovated and converted into comfortable mountain shelters, with stunning views.

This trip offers everything you need to enjoy an unforgettable alpine experience: rugged mountains, walls, ridges, glacial remains, stunning turquoise blue lakes, gorges, forests and wild rivers. Besides, cities, towns and places with a lot of history, such as Berchtesgaden, Königssee, the Kehlsteinhaus or Eagle's Nest**.**

Whether you travel alone or as a group, you will enjoy an amazing trek in this beautiful National Park in Germany. We are Spanish-speaking guides, passionate about sharing our love for nature and outdoor activities.

So send me a request if you want to be part of this unique hiking traverse in the beautiful Bavarian Alps. Check the date below and book your trip! If you are looking for more hiking options in Germany, check out my profile page.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Day

Arrival at Münich airport. Reception of travelers and transfer by road to accommodation. Programme presentation.

Day 2: Wimbachbrücke Bridge (620m) - Wimbachgries Refuge (1333m)

Today we will enjoy a mid-level hiking route, crossing the impressive Wimbach river glacial valley , located next to the west face of the Watzmann (2713m), the highest mountain of the National Park and second highest of Germany.

Along the valley, you can see the amount of light gray and dolomite sediments deposited in the valley floor for thousands of years, sometimes resembling a snowy landscape. Our route ends at the Wimbachgries refuge, a nice and cozy place where we will spend the night.

Day 3: Hundstodgatterl Pass (2188m) - Kärlinger Refuge (1630m)

Hundstod -meaning  “the death of the dog”- is the name of the mountain which marks the border between Austria and Germany and which we will take as reference to our right throughout the ascent from the Wimbachgries Hut, in this medium-high level route. We will walk for a large part of the day through an authentic limestone, between dolines and lapiaces, in a spectacular and wild alpine environment, with the sure presence of graceful marmots. We will spend the next two nights at the Kärlingerhaus Refuge.

Day 4: Touring around refuge or Viehkogel Summit (2157m) - Kärlinger Refuge (1630m)

Today you are offered two options: either taking the opportunity to have a slightly calmer day, being able to tour the surroundings of the Kärlingerhaus refuge and rest on its wonderful terrace, or continuing with the program and make the ascent to the summit of the Viehkogel (2157m), on the border with neighboring Austria, from where you have one of the best general views of the Berchtesgaden National Park. We will return to the same refuge again and in the afternoon we can swim in the nearby Funtensee lake or climb another small hill nearby to enjoy the spectacular views that this environment offers us. You decide today!

Day 5: Königssee Panoramic Summit (1718m) - Wasseralm Refuge (1416m)

Precious day with a medium-high level mountain route, with impressive views of rocky walls, forests and glacial lakes. The road is especially narrow and full of sections with steep slopes provided with wooden stairs. Our end of stage will coincide with one of the most picturesque mountain huts and places in the National Park, the Wasseralm refuge (“the water pastures”), a wooden hut used by pastors in the area for a long time to pass the summer seasons with the cattle. The lack of amenities in this refuge is compensated by the beauty of the place and the kindness of the people who take care of it. It is a unique place, you will love it!

Day 6: Landtalsteig (1630m) - Gotzen Alm (1685 m)

Today we enjoy a spectacular path, on medium-high level route, which crosses the vertical wall that forms the glacial cirque of the Obersee Lake. To end the day, we will climb to the Warteck summit, from where we will have the best views of the whole trekking, if the weather is good. Overnight at the Gotzenalm mountain, a perfect place to spend an restorative afternoon at the refuge and contemplate a beautiful sunset.

Day 7: Jenner Summit (1802m) - Vorderbrand Refuge (1060m)

Today we have a long stage of medium-high level in which we will climb to the summit of the Jenner peak, one of the best known viewpoints on the edge of the Berchtesgaden National Park. With the final descent, we will reach the refuge of the first day, where we will spend the last two nights and pick up our luggage, enjoying a good and well deserved shower. We will also taste the authentic Bavarian cuisine here, in a very cozy environment and with the spectacular views of the Watzmann massif all around us

Day 8: Boat to the Königssee - St. Bartolome Route by the Obersee - Vorderbrand Refuge (1060 m)

The beauty of the glacial valley formed by the Obersee and Königssee lakes is comparable to that of the Norwegian fjords. The calm of the pure waters of the lake, with the majesty of the east face of the Watzmann and the impressive panorama of vertical walls, green forests, waterfalls and crystal clear lakes, are just some of the attractions of this place. We will return for dinner and sleep at the same place as the previous day.

Day 9: End of Tour

Today we will say goodbye, hoping you enjoyed this wonderful trek.

Hi, nice to meet you!
I am working together with Laura Carmona González, we both were born in Spain and now we are living in the north of the Black Forest in Germany, close to the German Alps and the Vosges in France. Now I am going to tell you something else about myself.
I was born in Spain in a small village between Toledo and Madrid, nearby the Spanish Central Mountain Range. I have been living for some years in Scotland, New Zealand and 8 years in Germany. Spanish is my mother tongue and I talk fluent English and German as well as a bit of French.
I am qualified trekking, MTB and horse riding guide as well as Black Forest Middle-North Natural Park Guide - Schwarzwald Guide. Two years ago I finished my qualification as a Mountain Leader UIMLA.
Nature and mountains are a very important thing for me from long time ago, that is why I decided to take this hobby as my profession. I have worked more than fifteen years as a trekking, MTB and horse riding guide for many companies and travel agencies in different countries in the world.

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland. The guide Mitja was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, answering all my many questions and providing advice. On the day head to take another group but he quickly arranged another guide Borut, who was brilliant. We had a fantastic morning learning via ferrata at Hvadnik in the gorge. It gave us the confidence to later hire our own equipment and go out in Mojstrana. Altogether a five star + experience. Thank you.
