Hida Mountains

Description

Hakuba Sanzan, or Hakuba Three Mounts, is a term to indicate three mountains in the area. They are Mount Hakuba (2932m), Mount Shaku (2812m) and Mount Shirouma Yari (2903m). And we find them within the Chubu Mountains National Park.

We will meet at Hakuba village, at the foot of the North Alps at Nagano prefecture. Many climbers visit Hakuba in the summer, and skiers also go there in the winter.

Thehike starts at the Tsubaike Nature Park, via the ridge of Mount Korenge. We will have magnificent views of Ushiro Tateyama mountains. Then we will traverse the three mountains that together form Hakuba Sanzan. After summiting them, we will descend through Tsugaike Nature Park, via the Takayama lake and Hakuba Ooike, above the clouds.

In addition, you will be able to enjoy the Shirouma Yari hot springs. We can also go to Hakuba-yari Onsen, one of Japan’s leading high altitude hot springs. Another option is Renge Onsen at the foot of the north side of Hakuba Ooike.

And the alpine flora is extremely abundant and varied. In fact, as some areas covered by flowers are usually above the clouds in Oodeppara, this area is known as the paradise above the clouds.

The charm of this tour is that in a small group we can do a ridge traverse overlooking the Hakuba mountains. I think that you will truly appreciate Hakuba during this tour.

What people are saying about Japan

Jun is a responsible and reliable guide. He is also knowledgeable on the local flora and fauna and managed to show us quite a few interesting alpine flowers, birds and animals. He is kind and helpful and converses well in English. I will not hesitate to recommend him to any anyone needing an English speaking guide in Japan.

As for Kikuo-san, we both really liked her.  She is very pleasant.  A bit quiet spoken in a good way.  She obviously knows the Akan region very well, as she lives inside the national park.  She has very responsible and well organised.  I would have her guide us again, when we go back to the area.

Arnaud

Just back from Hakuba –Japan and I’m so pleased to confirm we got such a great experience with Iwao who has provided a service above all expectations. Indeed assisting a family confronted to a new environment requires a certain level of patience and attention and all the family appreciated his sense of responsibilities and seriousness which allowed us to really enjoy this region by experiencing touring, hicking and of course skiing in immaculate powder. Iwao was very discreet but always acted to ensure we could take the best of all Hakuba mountains could offer to us during these 5 days. This experience will for sure remain in all our minds for long and this will be mainly thanks to Iwao ! Best, Arnaud
