Description

Join me for a beautiful hiking experience in Daisetsuzan area, observing a unique variety of alpine flora.

If you are looking for mountains full of blossoming alpine plants in Hokkaido, this program is for you! In this traverse in the Daisetsuzan area, at the heart of the Hokkaido Island, you’ll be able to see plants growing in snow field and in grassland.

In fact, it is possible to observe the unique mixture of Eurasia origin species and North-America origin species.

Besides, we will hike two mountains of this area: Hakuundake (2,230 m) and Kurodake (1,984 m).

The most suitable season for flora observation is around July 10th for Beefsteak plant (Pedicularis japonica) and from early to middle of August for Gentian (Gentiana scabra).

You should also consider that hiking in July usually includes climbing on snowy gorge.

We had an excellent time hiking up to the summit of Mt Kurodake. Jun gave us a good intro to the flora and fauna on the way up and regaled us with stories all the way up. He set a pace suitable for us and ensured our safety throughout. Jun comes highly recommended!
