Description

Slovenia is a place of magnificent untouched beauty and wildlife. And hiking, is a wonderful way to discover this natural treasure. Come with me on this 6-day hiking tour and discover this hiker’s paradise!

Located in Central Europe, Slovenia offers over 10,000 km (6,200 miles) of hiking trails for all levels. During this 6-day adventure, we’ll focus on exploring the Julian and the Kamnik Alps, the two biggest mountain ranges in the country.

We’ll start by exploring the north side of the Kamnik Alps. During our first two days, we’ll visit the famous Logarska Valley which is one of the most beautiful Alpine glacial valleys in Europe. Then, we’ll continue to the Julian Alps which are known for having the most spectacular Slovenian mountains. They are home to the amazing Triglav national Park where we’ll discover Slovenia’s highest peaks, charming limestone walls, and numerous waterfalls.

Regarding our accommodation, we’ll have the opportunity to rest in beautiful mountain huts where will enjoy the solitude of  nature while discovering the rich Balkan cuisine and Slovenia’s rich cultural history.

This hiking program is suitable for outdoor lovers who are physically fit. Although no climbing skills are necessary, all participants should be comfortable hiking for around 5-7 hrs a day on hilly terrain at a steady pace. For a more detailed description of the trip, take a look at the itinerary below!

So if you want to get out into the wildest areas of Slovenia, please send me a request and we’ll start organizing this 6-day hiking tour in the Kamnik and Julian Alps!  I will make sure to accommodate your requests and desires.

Itinerary

Day 0: Arrival day

Transfer to the comfortable hotel close to the Ljubljana Airport. You should aim to arrive by late afternoon. There will be a welcome meeting, briefing and kit check at 7pm.

Day 1: Meet the Kamnik Alps

I will pick you up from your base on previously agreed time. Usually it is better to start a little earlier in order to get into elevation before it gets too warm. From your base, we will drive to the famous green Logarska Valley on the north side of the Kamnik Alps. From there, we start a stunning hike in the shade of pine tree forest. This is our time to get to know each other and find the right flow for the hike which will then be utilized throughout the next few days. You will stay in a simple but comfortable hut in the mountains, and enjoy warm local meals and drinks of your choice.

Elevation gain: 600 meters

Day 2: Experience Logarska Valley

After breakfast and a little stretching, we will go out again to explore some more gems that are located in the mountains above the Logarska Valley. There are a few suitable options. We will organize lunch at one of the huts above or in the valley, depending on which option should we take. After a fulfilling day out, we will drive to the west and you will relax in a nice hotel at the base of Julian Alps.

Elevation gain: 600 meters

Day 3: First taste of Julian Alps

Today we will rest in order to gain some strength before the long hike ahead of us. However, we will not sit around playing chess. Probably the most important valley in the Julian Alps is Vrata Valley. It is 15 km long valley which leads to the north face of Triglav. Before a short hike towards the overwhelming Triglav we will follow a magnificent trail that is not known by many people and leads to one of the biggest waterfalls in the country.

Day 4: The Julian Alps above Bohinj Lake

The high plateau pastures of ‘Planina Blato’ above the Bohinj Lake will be the best way to start our day. From there, we’ll hike through several traditional shepherd’s huts. And on the way, we may stop at one of these huts for a quick lunch and enjoy some Slovenian traditional food. We finish with a descent towards the Triglav lakes Valley and settle in the mountain hut ‘Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih’. The hut is located just by the Double Lake and Lake Močivec.

Elevation gain: 700 meters

Day 5: Triglav Lakes Valley

A bit shorter, but the most spectacular day is the hike up to the Triglav Lakes Valley. It is one of the most romantic places in the Julian Alps. It is a valley above the famous Lake Bohinj, in the direction of Mt Triglav and Mt Kanjavec. The valley is also called the Seven Lakes Valley (although there are actually ten lakes in total). All the lakes in the valley are connected by underground aquifers. The lakes ultimately drain out as a spectacular waterfall called ‘Slap Savica’ at the end of the Bohinj Valley, which feeds the Bohinj lake itself.

After an hour of pleasant walking, we will reach the biggest lake called the Kidney Lake due to its distinctive shape. From there, we’ll continue the hike and discover the five upper lakes, which are smaller but located in the fantastic ambient of Mt Kanjavec and other mountains. In the early summer season, some of these lakes may be still covered in ice and snow. We finish the day in the mountain hut just above these higher lakes.

Elevation gain: 450 meters

Day 6: Soča Valley

From the hut ‘Zasavska koča’ we’ll descend down to the Soča Valley. There, we can visit the magnificent Soča spring and then visit a completely renovated traditional farm ‘Kekčeva domačija’. It is a truly unique place where we can enjoy a unique culinary experience based on local traditional cuisine.

Day 7: Last day

Departure after breakfast.
