The Senjogahara plateau is located in northwestern Nikko. Approximately 140 km north of Tokyo and only 2 hours by train. The plateau is part of the Nikko National Park. It has different beautiful scenic landscapes. For example mountains, marshes, lakes, waterfalls and hot springs.
The Senjogahara trail is very popular because this board walk is mostly flat. This makes it an easy walk. Therefore it is enjoyable and relaxing for young and old alike! The hike is about 5 km and takes around 5 hours. During this time you quickly transition from one beautiful area to another.
It passes through Yumoto Onsen – Gensen – Yunoko lake – Senjogahara Plateau – Ryuzu waterfalls – Shobu gahara – pleasure boat ride in Lake Chuzenji – Kegon waterfalls
During the summer there are stunning alpine flowers and plants. And in autumn the colours of the leaves are simply beautiful. Therefore, it's great to visit this are year-round!
Do you want to enjoy beautiful scenery and relax in Nikko's rich hidden nature? Then this hike is perfect for you! Beginner hikers are welcome. I will be waiting for you to contact me! Another hike that I really enjoy in this National Park is to Mt. Nantai, check it out!

I have enjoyed climbing mountains since I was a high school boy. Since then, I've also lived and worked in the Netherlands for 10 years and in the US for 7 years, where I have enjoyed climbing in the alps and in the Yosemite, and ski mountaineering in the alps.
After my return to Japan, I rediscovered the beauty of Japan's nature and its mountains. I would be very happy to share this with you, not only through climbing, but together with good local sake and food, and some photography under the stars.
I guide through the season, and my favourite mountains are my local mountains that are in Tanzawa area as well as Hakkoda in Aomori, in the North. My passion also includes photography. I will be able to give you lots of tips on mountain photography even if only have smartphone or compact digital cameras.
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
