Description

El Chaltén is widely regarded as one of Argentina’s most outstanding yet still largely unexplored mountain ski destinations. It offers a long and reliable winter season, along with exceptional snow quality that makes it ideal for backcountry skiing. The region features a remarkable diversity of terrain, with varied orientations and slope angles that allow skiers to adapt to changing weather conditions while fully experiencing the unique Patagonian environment.

Skiing here means being surrounded by some of the most iconic peaks in the Andes, including Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, which create a dramatic and unforgettable setting. This combination of world-class landscapes and high-quality snow makes the experience truly unique. Spending a full week exploring these mountains, skiing some of the best snow in Patagonia, and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the small mountain town of El Chaltén becomes a central goal of the adventure.

Throughout the journey, areas such as Cerro Vespignani, Mosquito Valley, Cerro Crestón, and Cerro Madsen stand out as key objectives, each offering different types of terrain and perspectives of the surrounding massif. Together, they provide a complete and varied ski experience in one of Patagonia’s most spectacular regions.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Equipment Check

Upon arriving in town, we check ski gear and clothing, and adjust the itinerary based on weather conditions to ensure the best possible experience in each location.

Day 2: Mosquito Valley and First Ascent

Early in the morning, we depart toward the Mosquito Stream valley. Depending on snow conditions, we may need to hike for 30 to 50 minutes carrying skis on our backpacks. We then ascend through the valley, which offers varied orientations and slopes, making it an ideal place to begin the ski week. Return to El Chaltén.

Day 3: Transfer to Cerro Crestón and Glacier Skiing

On this day, we travel to the Cerro Crestón valley. After a one-and-a-half-hour drive, we reach the parking area and hike for about 40 minutes to the refuge, where we will spend two nights to fully enjoy the mountain’s possibilities. After settling in and preparing our gear, we go skiing near the glacier. One option is the Central Col and the north shoulder, before returning to the refuge.

Day 4: Cerro Vespignani Ascent via Huemul Glacier

From the refuge, we access the Cerro Vespignani valley, a massive Patagonian giant. We head up to the north col, then descend to the Huemul Glacier and begin the ascent of the peak. We later return to the refuge via the Huemul Lagoon.

Day 5: Central Summit and Descent via Lomo del Refugio

After breakfast, we head toward the central summit and then ski down the so-called “natural waterfall,” continuing through the Lomo del Refugio valley. At the end of the day, we prepare to return to El Chaltén.

Day 6: Laguna de los Tres and Cerro Madsen Ski Day

A long day awaits us as we aim to ski near Laguna de los Tres, a classic viewpoint of Mount Fitz Roy. Here, we have several options, such as Cerro Madsen and its southern slopes, which often offer good snow and favorable inclines. We then descend to Poincenot Camp, where we spend the night.

Day 7: French Valley Viewpoint and Return to El Chaltén

After breakfast, we return to Laguna de los Tres and head toward the French Valley viewpoint, a panoramic spot overlooking the massif and Laguna Sucia with its immense glacier. At the end of the day, we return to camp and continue toward El Chaltén.

Mountain Guide

IFMGA/UIAGM guide from Argentina.

I’m trekking guide since 2009, and became fully IFMGA certified in 2014.
I’ve climbed in many destinations in the Andes in Argentina, and also in Perú, Brasil, France, Spain, Italy and Austria.

I work together with two other colleagues and friends, Indio and Tomás, who are also IFMGA. So if I’m not available to guide you, one of them can do it.

The three of us live in El Chalten, where we practice our profession and develop our passion for climbing and skiing. And we want to share it by opening the doors to all those who want to live their Patagonian experience in a safe and unforgettable way.

We are also committed to mountain training. Therefore, we can give you the basic tools to move in the mountain safely and smoothly. That's why we offer courses for all levels depending on the terrain you want to train. We give lessons of rock climbing, ice climbing, glacier transit and mountain skiing.
