Get face to face with Cerro Cónico, an international landmark between Argentina and Chile, nestled within the Lago Bagilt Provincial and standing at an imposing elevation of 2250 meters (7,381 feet). With its remarkable features, this mountain has all the ingredients for a great adventure.
Due to its distinctive terrain and challenging ascent, this mountain has become a symbol of the region, standing as a solitary summit that is rarely frequented by visitors. During winter, a significant part of the ascent can be done using skis.
Begin your journey by reaching Lake Bagilt using a sturdy 4x4 vehicle. From this point we will hike along the lake's edge, and ascend to the refuge area just above the Patagonian Andean forest, where we will spend the night.
Dawn breaks, marking the start of an early day filled with adventure. Prepare to traverse rugged ridges, cross glaciers, and conquer climbing sections graded as level 5 difficulty. These challenging paths will guide us towards the seldom-explored summit of Cerro Cónico. Anticipate a lengthy day ahead, as we have yet to descend back to the vehicle, concluding our journey with an estimated duration of around 15 hours.

Meeting point
Transfer by 4x4 vehicle from the hotel to the Lago Bagilt Provincial Reserve. We will travel through the 16 de Octubre Valley for about 40 km, and then another 15 km by 4x4 before starting the hike.
We will stop to register at the park ranger's house and begin walking along the left bank of Lago Bagilt, located at 1000 meters above sea level. We will then continue ascending through the coihue and lenga forest, crossing meadows and crossing some streams until we reach the Club Andino Esquel refuge.
We will spend the night either in the refuge or set up a tent nearby.
We will depart early in the morning, with a 1-hour ascent through rugged terrain to reach the col that separates the Bagilt Valley from the Blanco River Valley.
We will continue with technical passages along rocky ridges until we reach the North Glacier. We will rope up for this short glacial crossing and determine our climbing route based on mountain conditions.
Option 1: Eggman route through the center of the north face
Option 2: West variant (De la Fuente, Santos, Contreras).
There will be some short roped sections and scrambling through steep terrain to finally climb a 30-meter section on rock or mixed terrain, depending on the conditions, leading us to this beautiful and remote Patagonian summit.
It will take about 4 hours to descend back to the refuge, pack up the camp, and in an additional 2 hours, we will be back on the shores of Lago Bagilt to return to the hotel.

I reached out to Ignacio when I was in Esquel, and we agreed Cerro Cónico near Lake Baggilt. We postponed the trip for 1 day, so we could have better weather on the summit. Ignacio knows the mountain and the summit very well. It was a great day (and very long 😆) to be guided by him. I would definitely go with him again on another mountain.

We've had a superbe experience in climbing the semi-technical, alpine style Cerro Conico mountain in western Chubut, in the Patagonian Andes this summer. After spending the night under the stars, we left very early in the morning, and by sunset we were already traversing the glacier at the peak's base. We reached the top at about 11 am, the view was just amazing, looking to wonderful sceneries of both Chile and Argentina.
