FAQs: Hiking in Ushuaia

Why choose Ushuaia for hiking and trekking?

Ushuaia offers an unusual combination of mountains, forests, glaciers, lakes, peat bogs and the Beagle Channel, all within easy reach of the city. You can choose between short scenic hikes, demanding mountain routes and multi-day wilderness treks. The surrounding Fuegian Andes also provide excellent opportunities to explore Patagonia with a local guide who knows the terrain and changing conditions.

What are the best Ushuaia hiking tours?

Popular guided hikes include Laguna Esmeralda, Martial Glacier, Ojo del Albino and Vinciguerra Glacier. Tierra del Fuego National Park offers another wide range of trails, while longer itineraries can explore remote areas of Tierra del Fuego and Peninsula Mitre. The right trip depends on your fitness, experience, available time and the conditions during your visit.

When is the best season for hiking in Ushuaia?

The main hiking season generally runs from late spring through early autumn, with the most favorable conditions from November to April. Days are longer and many trails that are seasonal are accessible during this period. Winter brings snow and different mountain conditions, so some summer hiking routes may be unavailable or require additional experience and equipment.

What is the weather like for hiking in Ushuaia?

Ushuaia has a cool, humid climate with frequent precipitation and changeable mountain weather. Conditions can shift quickly, so hikers should be prepared for rain, cold temperatures and wet or muddy trails even during summer. Always check the latest weather and trail conditions before setting out, particularly for longer or more exposed routes.

How strong is the wind in Ushuaia?

Wind is an important consideration when planning a hike in Ushuaia. The area is influenced by strong winds and maritime weather, and conditions can change quickly in exposed mountain terrain. A windproof outer layer is essential, and your guide can adapt the route or itinerary when weather conditions make a planned hike unsuitable.

What should I pack for hiking in Ushuaia?

Dress in layers and bring a waterproof and windproof jacket, warm mid-layers, hiking trousers, moisture-wicking base layers, sturdy hiking boots and spare socks. A warm hat and gloves are useful even in summer. For longer treks, also bring sufficient water, food, sun protection, navigation equipment and any personal medication you need. Your guide will confirm the specific equipment required for your chosen itinerary.

What are the best Ushuaia hikes for beginners?

Beginners can choose shorter and less demanding hikes around Ushuaia or in Tierra del Fuego National Park. Laguna Esmeralda is also offered as a guided beginner-to-intermediate hike on Explore-Share. A guided itinerary allows the route and pace to be adapted to your experience and the current trail conditions.

What are the best intermediate hikes in Ushuaia?

Intermediate hikers can consider routes such as Laguna Esmeralda, Ojo del Albino, Martial and Vinciguerra, depending on the itinerary and current conditions. These hikes can involve longer distances, steeper terrain, uneven ground and changing weather, so a reasonable level of fitness and suitable hiking equipment are important.

What are the best advanced treks near Ushuaia?

Experienced hikers can choose longer and more demanding routes such as Laguna del Caminante, remote Tierra del Fuego traverses or multi-day adventures in Peninsula Mitre. These itineraries involve greater exposure to remote terrain and require appropriate fitness, equipment and mountain experience. Some routes also have seasonal restrictions or additional hazards that need to be assessed before departure.

Which regions are best for hiking around Ushuaia?

The main hiking areas include Tierra del Fuego National Park, the Valle de Tierra Mayor and the Martial area, as well as the valleys and mountains around Ushuaia. Tierra del Fuego National Park combines forests, peatlands, lakes and the Beagle Channel, while the areas around Laguna Esmeralda, Martial and Vinciguerra provide more mountain-focused terrain. Longer expeditions can venture farther into the remote wilderness of Tierra del Fuego and Peninsula Mitre.

How do I get to Ushuaia and get around for hiking?

Ushuaia is served by Malvinas Argentinas International Airport, with connections to other destinations in Argentina. Once in the city, many hiking areas can be reached by road, while guided tours may include transportation to and from trailheads. Tierra del Fuego National Park is approximately 12 kilometers from Ushuaia and is accessed via National Route 3.

Can I hike around Ushuaia without a guide?

Some marked trails can be explored independently, but a guide is particularly useful for longer, remote or more demanding routes. Weather can change quickly, trails can become wet or muddy, and some routes have seasonal restrictions or specific hazards. A local guide can assess conditions, select an appropriate itinerary and help manage navigation, timing and safety.

Where should I stay for a hiking trip in Ushuaia?

Ushuaia is the main base for hiking in the area and offers the widest choice of accommodation, restaurants, transport and services. Staying in the city also makes it easier to join guided trips that depart for different trailheads. Camping is available at designated areas inside Tierra del Fuego National Park during the relevant season, subject to park regulations.

What can I expect from a guided Tierra del Fuego National Park tour?

A guided visit to Tierra del Fuego National Park can combine forest trails, peatlands, lakes and coastal landscapes along the Beagle Channel. Depending on the itinerary, you can visit areas such as Lago Acigami, Ensenada Zaratiegui and Bahía Lapataia while learning about the natural and cultural environment. The park has trails ranging from short, easy walks to demanding mountain routes.

How much does a guided Tierra del Fuego National Park tour cost?

The price depends on the itinerary, group size, duration, transportation and services included. The national park entrance fee is separate unless the specific itinerary states that it is included. From June 1, 2026, the general daily admission fee for Tierra del Fuego National Park is ARS 40,000, with different rates for national residents, provincial residents and students.

What people are saying about Hiking | Ushuaia

Kevin

I came here at the end of Winter, so it was still snowing and the lake was unfortunately frozen with snow on top. However, the hike had amazing views with a very knowledgeable Guide. Pick up was on time and all information was given to me as needed. Highly recommend.

Since my Dad could not come due to illness I am hoping his tour price can be refunded. The tour was nice although the trail conditions were incredibly muddy and wet, which can’t be helped. But people should be warned about how wet and muddy it is. Gabriel and Félix were great and the views were spectacular! Thanks.

Jorg

Merilyn

Nicky

Marine was a really wonderful guide and she made the 3 day trek around Tierra del Fuego a great pleasure for us. She is very knowledgable and a very professional guide. Marine also helped us with renting clothes that we needed and went the extra mile to make sure we had everything we would need. I would definitely recommend this trek as well as Marine and Seba. Booking and paying through explore-share was also very easy and efficient. Thank you to all!
