Soak in the stunning alpine scenery of the Lagorai range in Trentino as you climb the Ferrata dei Laghi, a modern via ferrata route that loops around the Bombasel Lakes near Alpe Cermis.
This route combines two contrasting ferrata segments: the moderately challenging Highway section for the ascent, and the easy Vertigo section for the descent. Together, they create a rewarding and accessible circuit high in the Dolomitic Prealps — perfect for adventurers looking to experience panoramic views without excessive technical difficulty.
Our adventure begins at the Paion del Cermis mountain station, which we’ll reach by taking two gondolas from the valley floor near Cavalese. From there, we’ll follow a scenic alpine trail toward the Laghi di Bombasel, nestled in a grassy plateau beneath jagged ridgelines. The approach hike takes around 40–45 minutes, offering an excellent warm-up with magnificent views right from the start.
From the lakes, we’ll tackle the Highway section of the via ferrata, a modern and well-equipped route that ascends through three short vertical walls, interspersed with traverses and ledges. While the route does not require advanced climbing skills, it does offer a few moderately exposed passages, making it a good introduction to vertical movement on rock. The total climb takes around 1.5 hours and ends near Castel di Bombasel at 2,535 meters, where a summit cross marks the high point of our loop.
After taking time to enjoy the spectacular panorama of the Lagorai chain, we’ll descend via the Vertigo section, a gently sloping ridge equipped with steel cables and large rungs for support. This part is straightforward and ideal for those with less experience — in fact, it’s often used as the main ascent route for beginners. The descent is safe and enjoyable, allowing us to relax and appreciate the full sweep of alpine beauty that surrounds us.
The entire outing — including lifts, approach hike, ferrata loop, and return — takes about 6 hours, making this a perfect full-day adventure in one of Trentino’s lesser-known but breathtakingly beautiful corners.
Whether you’re looking to practice your via ferrata technique in a moderate setting or enjoy a guided alpine loop with a mix of challenge and comfort, the Ferrata dei Laghi delivers a balanced, scenic experience for all levels.

Mountain Guide
Hi! I'm Renato, IFMGA guide from the Dolomites, and I work together with my colleagues Robert, Patrick & Walter (German speaking), Paolo, Matteo, Davide, Giorgia and Luca.
If I'm not available to guide you, one of them will take care of you.
I was born in 1961, I live in Campitello di Fassa, in the Dolomites, together with my family. I have two sons, one is a mountain guide, the other is a ski instructor. I am a certified mountain guide since 1982, an instructor of guides, alpine ski instructor and a Federal coach for ISEF.
Being in the mountains has always been my passion, guiding people, teaching them climbing, mountaineering... during the various seasons of the year. I very much enjoy drawing nice curves in fresh powder snow and discover the charm of the frozen waterfalls.
My curriculum and professional mountaineering is made of many ascents and some openings of routes in the Dolomites and the Alps. I climbed in Yosemite Valley (California), Ben Nevis (Scotland) and Norway, Greece, Spain and Sardinia. I did also several high altitude climbs like Mt Denali (Alaska), Ama Dablam (6828m), Cho Oyu (8201m), Manaslu (8163m), Shivling in India (6545m), Cotopaxi and Chimborazo in Ecuador (5897m and 6310m), Patagonia (Argentina).
Feel free to get in touch with me if you are coming in the Dolomites for skiing (alpine, freeride and ski touring), rock climbing, sport climbing and multi pitch climbing. It will be my pleasure to guide you here and let you discover my secret spots.

Robert was very friendly and a great instructor. The via ferrata he took us on was amazing!

First, it was an amazing trip. Robert was great, although different than guides in the US. He was more hands off. Example, he brought the gear, we put it on, and he said let's go. At the obstacles, he briefly described what we'd do, then we'd go. We have experience so this worked fine. He was friendly and accommodating, but interaction was light. He provided a sense of security and lead us, but we also felt that we owned the experience. I'm used to guides being right next to you the entire time so this was different. I found it empowering. As with most experiences in the area, you may not hear from the guide until 1-2 days prior to the trip. Overall, there is no question we were glad to have Robert.

Robert was fun to climb with, a good teacher, and a good photographer!

Had no idea you need a car in the Dolomites. Was not staying in town and didn’t have a car. My guide was so so kind to help me get to the trailhead! I was solo and he was very nice to take photos for me.
Rosie
We had a fantastic time trying something new and the views were stunning. We were given the option of two via ferrata by our guide and felt that our chosen route was challenging enough but not too intimidating for a first go. Roberto was very knowledgeable and experienced and, as it turns out, also a great photographer!
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
