FAQs: Backcountry Skiing in Patagonia

What should I know about Backcountry Skiing Patagonia?

Must-see in Argentina: Las Leñas, Chapelco, Cerro Catedral, Cerro Bayo, Castor and La Hoya. All these ski centers keep the mystique that has made them famous and has given rise to fans who repeat the adventure of skiing every winter.

Must-see in Chile: The same happens on the other side of the Andes in the winter centers of Chile, such as El Portillo, Colorado, Valle Nevado and Chillán, which also have their own magic when everything is painted white.

Why should I choose Patagonia for my Backcountry Skiing adventure?

A long skiing tradition

In both Chile and Argentina, people have been skiing since the mid-30s of the last century. Although it is not as popular as other regions of the world, there are records attesting that some ski lifts were installed in Patagonia rather than in Spain.

Gastronomy

In Argentina, stews, empanadas, grilled lamb, trout and the influence of Italian cuisine stand out. In Chilean resorts you should also try their meats, stews and seafood. Of course, wines from local wineries are always a guarantee of quality at low prices in both countries.

Infrastructure

In Argentina, 6 of the 8 most important ski resorts have large ski lifts (4 capacity seats) and are relatively modern, as in Chapelco and Cerro Catedral. In Chile, ski resorts are smaller in terms of km of pistes, but they offer good wilderness for off-piste skiing.

Best period

Due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Chile's ski season starts at the beginning of June while in Argentina it begins a few weeks later, towards the middle or end of June.
