**UIAGM/IFMGA Mountain Guide from Ecuador.**

I fell in love with the mountains at a young age while climbing Ecuador’s volcanoes with my father. I guided in the Andes for 8 years and have been guiding for the past four years in the Northwest United States. In 1997 I expanded his adventure skills by taking on rock climbing. I represented Chimborazo province three times as the Ecuadorian National Rock Climbing Champion.

I completed his UIAGM certification with the Bolivian Mountain & Trekking Guide Association, accredited by the National School of Ski and Alpinism of Chamonix (ENSA), and completed Advanced Alpine and Rock Guides Courses with American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA).

I usually spend some months every year in Ecuador (from October to January, but it varies every year). The rest of the year I am based and guide in Europe.

This unique program proposes an **8-day trek in Sangay National Park, Ecuador**, a beautiful preserved area with amazing options for hiking and climbing in the wilderness.

The Sangay National Park opened in 1979, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. In this park we find extremely varied flora and fauna. Progressing from the rainforest of the lowland to the alpine tundra. Because of this large diversity, we can find very diverse flower species. We can also encounter jaguars, monkeys and other animals. In addition, more than 500 different bird species live there. Moreover, bears, tapirs and stags can be found in the park highest areas.

If you want to live an incredible experience exploring the stunning highlands of the Andes, then this is the perfect trip!

The area where this mountain stands is quite remote. There are continuous outbreaks of hot red rock and ashes, rendering the ascent dangerous. Each hour and year the situation of the volcano changes. Although the ascent itself doesn’t have technical difficulties, the ongoing outbreaks are risky and dangerous.

During these past years we’ve successfully climbed it until its summit. Of course we wish to continue. But we have to accept that nature has its own will. And the area is already wonderful with its long valleys, forest and great paramos. During the hike we will meet local people and share experiences with them.

I propose to you the following itinerary.

**Day 1: Quito from Casa Gardenia to Riobamba – Guargualla**  
Leaving Quito at 8AM, drive south through the Panamerican highway. We go through the city of Riobamba and have lunch. We arrive at the Guargualla Chico village around 4PM, where the Sangay hike will start. Then we camp, have dinner & sleep.

**Day 2: from Guargualla Chico to Escaleras**  
Breakfast around 8AM. Then we start hiking towards the remote corners of this beautiful environment. We will camp next at Rincon Escaleras.

**Day 3: from Rincón Escaleras to Plazapamba**  
Breakfast around 8AM, then our hike continues to reach at the Plazapamba valley, where we set camp.

**Day 4: from Plazapamba to Playas**  
Breakfast around 8AM, then we hike to Playas and set camp there.

**Day 5: from Playas to Sangay Summit at 5230m (The fiery Mountain) and back to Playas**  
Early morning at 4AM and breakfast. Afterwards we begin our hike, and after 1 hour we get to a rock lava. We make it to the “window” (4180m). Then we continue the steep trek in the volcanic rock, ascending to the summit, which takes 6-7 hours. We take some pictures and rest, then return comfortably to camp site at Playas.

**Day 6: from Playas to Plazapamba**  
Breakfast, then we leave the Sangay Volcano base. We hike by the same route we took on the way in.

**Day 7: from Plazapamba to Rincón Escaleras**  
Breakfast and then continue through the same path. Rincón Escaleras Camp.

**Day 8: from Rincón Escaleras to Guargualla Chico**  
The car will there waiting for us. We drive back to the civilisation after these long hiking days. We either arrive to Riobamba Hotel or continue driving until Quito, around 6-7PM.

Sangay National Park 8-day trekking tour

This program will drive you to some of the best mountain spots of the **Andes** in **Ecuador**. You will start in **Quito** region by an acclimatization program. Then we will climb progressively higher summits until reaching the two highest summits from the country, **Cotopaxi** (5897 m) and **Chimborazo** (6268 m).

This program will not only allow you to maximize your chances to ascend the highest peaks. It will also take you through some of the most stunning landscapes of the area.

Hike up to Rucu Pichincha (4796 m). We leave from Quito at 8AM after breakfast, and travel to the cable car in Quito to make an initial altitude gain. We ascend at the 4796 m peak of the ancient Rucu Pichincha volcano. From the top we can see the Guagua Pichincha active volcano. Quito is nestled on the slopes of this active volcano. My primary goal here is to help each team member begin testing their response to higher altitude and to give our bodies a chance to get used to altitude, while enjoying the many photographic opportunities. The hike is around 3-4 hours up and 2 hours down to the cable car. We arrive at the hotel around 4-5PM.

Rucu Pichincha (4796 m)

After breakfast we depart from Quito to Ilinizas parking lot. We will leave Quito on the Pan-American Highway southbound where we cross a rich green and fertile valley of Machachi. It’s commonly referred to as “The Valley of the Volcanoes”. After 1:30h drive from Quito we arrive at a remote paramo in an area called la Virgins parking lot at (3900 m). From here we can hike for 3 h to reach the refuge (4600 m). On our hike we can cross the wonderful forest Polilepis trees (also called “árbol de papel” or “quinuar”). In the hike up we see beautiful landscapes. We arrive at the refuge around 3-4PM.

Refugio Ilinizas (4600 m)

We wake up early in the morning (5-6AM). We leave out to summit day attempt on Iliniza Norte. This peak is normally a fairly straightforward climb for acclimatization. The trail up on this mountain is sound and easy for most of the way when there is no snow. But if the weather is bad, cloudy or snowy, it is very easy to lose the trail. On one part of the route we will use a fixed rope to pass the “Death Pass”. If the conditions are risky, I will give you all the safety to enjoy your climbing acclimatization day. After this pass we continue hiking up until the summit. The average time to the summit is 3 h or less. At the summit, picture time, resting to recover the energy, enjoying the nature, etc. Afterwards we prepare to descend for 1:30 h to the refuge. After 1 h rest we pack our backpack to go down to the car park where our car transportation will take us out for one of our hotel destination near to Cotopaxi National Park for a good rest night.

Iliniza Norte (5125 m)

Recovering breakfast at La Estacion. Then we leave at 9AM from Machachi to Cotopaxi National Park. We continue our altitude acclimatization on the process of climbing Mt. Cotopaxi. The Cotopaxi car park is situated at 4550 m. From here we have a 45 min hike up with full packs to the Jose Rivas Refuge on the Cotopaxi flank North-West (4800 m). After arrival at the hut, we enjoy a hot tea and a short rest before climbing school training. We can go into the glacier around 11AM and work on the moderate glacier section, a good area to familiarize ourselves with the various climbing techniques and equipment. I will ensure you have the necessary glacier skills and all the techniques for climbing the high peaks like Cayambe, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. You’ll learn and practice rope-handling, glacier travel, snow climbing and basic crevasse rescue skills and safety techniques, i.e. the general procedures for high peak mountains. After a 5-hour training we will return to the refuge around 5PM. Lunch at the glacier. Late in the afternoon we go back by car.

Cotopaxi Glacier school day

In the morning we can take a rest if you feel tired. We stay at the hostel just to relax. If you feel good to make an small and easy hike, we can do it too. We can visit the big spring water that comes out from the foot of the Cotopaxi. We can also visit the Incas ruins (el Salitre). This hike lasts 3 hours. Then we return to the hotel for lunch. Then we can move up to the refuge again to continue our process for climbing Cotopaxi. We arrive at the refuge around 3-4PM. Early dinner at 5:30PM and early to bed, usually by 6:30PM.

Tambopaxi

We wake up at midnight. Breakfast and equipment check. We leave the refuge at 1AM. We will pass a group of uniform slopes and ice ramps of 30 and 35 degrees before reaching a glacier platform. We will enjoy one of the spectacular color displays in the Andes. From this point we will see the valley below us where the morning sunrise welcomes us with incredible colors. Our route will pass under a base of rock 400 feet wide called Yanasacha. The quichua name says it all, it’s a black wall of impressive size. The Indians called it the route of the moon. Here we start climbing glacier slopes of 35 and 45 degrees, at the top of which we will only have 15 more minutes climb to emerge onto Ecuador’s second highest summit: Cotopaxi (5897 m). Our approximate climbing time will have been 7 hours. Return to the refuge around 9-10AM. Rest and hike back down to the 4×4 in the parking lot and then drive to Latacunga City.

Cotopaxi summit (5897 m)

After Cotopaxi I recommend a rest day and visit Quilotoa crater lagoon (3900 m). We spend a full day around the stunning lagoon of Quilotoa. After this visit we can sleep by the small village (Chugchilan) in the afternoon drive down to the hostel.  
Included: Breakfast, Box Lunch, dinner. Mama Hilda Hostel.

Quilotoa

We will depart from Hostal Mama Hilda at 8AM and drive south of Cotopaxi where we will pass the agricultural towns of Latacunga and Ambato. It is a 5-h drive crossing agricultural and indigenous areas. At the end of the ride, we will arrive at the lower refuge of Chimborazo (4800 m).  
Included: Breakfast, Box Lunch, dinner. Refuge.

Chimborazo Refuge (4800 m)

Chimborazo, with 5 summits, is Ecuador’s highest mountain and a massive volcano! We will rise at midnight for breakfast and an equipment check and leave the hut at 1AM. We move immediately to the huge glacier on Chimborazo’s southwest face where we first traverse moderately angled ice slopes, climb through a series of icefalls and up the steep ice ramps. Climbing simultaneously on moderate grounds belaying up the steep pitches. Our team will rope together in order to cross crevasses and finally make it to the summit. This is the highest point of the Ecuador Andes peak. From here we have a magnificent view of the emerging volcanoes that form the eastern and western Cordillera. The said volcanoes seem to emerge from the clouds below our feet. Our approximate climbing time is 8 to 9 hours. After good pictures and resting on the top of the mountain we will return to the refuge. In the afternoon we drive back to Quito. Arrival in Quito at 7-8PM.

Illinza is a double peak volcano in the **Volcanoes Avenue,** in **Ecuador**. It has two peaks, the North (5126 m) and the South (5263 m). Here I propose you to summit the South (“Sur” in Spanish) peak during this 2-day trip.

We find this volcano 55 km to the south of Quito.

Come and join me for an incredible **10-Day Trek** through the **Avenue of Volcanoes** in **Ecuador**, culminating with the ascent of the two biggest **Volcanoes** in the country, **Cotopaxi** and **Chimborazo**.

There are so many amazing volcanoes in **Ecuador**, it would be difficult to pick one, or two, or three, or even four to climb. So during this **10-day Excursion**, we will climb to the top of five volcanoes. Hence, why this trip will be exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.

This trip is not only about climbing incredible peaks. Because there is so much to see in the **Avenue of Volcanoes**, when not climbing, you will be exploring other amazing areas. You will get to see the **Old Town Section** of **Quito**, which we will gladly tour you around. You will get to see the famous ***Ciudad Mitad Del Mundo*** which marks the exact location of the **Equator**. Cotopaxi, Chimborazo 10-Day Guided Ascent

**Chimborazo** (6268 m) is the highest summit in Ecuador. It’s an inactive volcano. It is located 150 km south-southwest of the capital Quito.

Chimborazo’s location in the equatorial bulge, combined with its elevation, make it the farthest peak from the center of the Earth.

This ascent is a great example of mixed ice and rock terrain, and is specially recommended for those with previous experience with crampons and ice-axe, who want to experience a real high altitude mountain.

This 2-day program is for experienced mountaineers and you must go through a proper acclimatization before going up. Otherwise, the recommendation is to do a longer program. It should include some previous peaks for acclimatization before going to the main summit.

After a late breakfast, we’ll start driving towards Chimborazo’s hut. Depending of the route conditions we’ll decide to stay at Carrel hut and climb the normal Veintimilla route or hike up to Stubel glacier and camp at 5.100m-16.567ft.

The final ascent. The hardest and most physically demanding day of the trip is coming. Wake up at 00:00pm and get ready for 6 to 8 hours sustained climb. We’ll reach Whimper summit where the most spectacular Andean Ecuadorian view is appreciated. Surrounding snowed peaks like Altar, Tungurahua, Ilinizas, Cotopaxi & Antisana could be all seen in a clear day.

After enjoying it, we’ll descend to the hut. Get some rest, pack up and drive back to Quito.

Cotopaxi is the highest active volcano in Ecuador, and the second highest peak of the country, with 5.897 m. It is located about 50 km south of Quito, capital city of Ecuador.

The last eruption occurred in 1877. Its name means ‘the moon neck’ in cayapa -native language-, because as it is a perfect cone, it seems that the moon can land on the top of it.

**Proposed Expedition:**

Go out from Quito at 10am.  
You get to Tambopaxi or La Rinconada around 12am. While having lunch, there is a talk about the ascent with the group.  
Light dinner at 5pm and a rest.  
Between 10 or 11pm, according to your physical condition, you wake up and prepare for the ascent.  
we drive to the car park located at 4600m. We start walking around midnight.  
About 5-6 hours ascent and we get to the summit of Cotopaxi, 5897m.  
We go down by the same way, about 2-3 hours down.  
Finally, we can have lunch on the way in Machachi or Latacunga, if we follow the way to Chimborazo.

This 2 days expedition is only for experienced mountaineers, who already have the necessary acclimatization.

At only 10 km from **Quito**, you will find a magical surprise: 3 enormous peaks. In fact, anyone who wants to challenge himself can climb these peaks in **Ecuador**. They form the **Guagua Pichincha Volcano,** which highest summit reaches to 4794 m. Local people call it Guagua.

Despite its altitude, climbers don’t need any technical preparation. This is because the surface and the volcano’s activity is under control and doesn’t mean a danger for hikers.

**Ecuador** is home to many renowned peaks. It is the case for example of Illiniza Sur, Altar-Obispo and Chimborazo. They are the protagonists of this adventure.

This is a very technical expedition for expert climbers. In fact, it is more technical than what people generally expect. The trip lasts 8 days. I particularly like it for advanced climbers that want to **discover some of the most renowned and remote volcanoes from Ecuador.**

#### Climb one of the mythical volcanoes in Ecuador!

**Antisana** is a double cone volcano. It is 50 km southeast of the capital city of Quito in Ecuador. In fact, with 5753 m, it is the 4th highest volcano in the country.

This is one of the most technically challenging climbs of the Ecuatorian Andes. The volcano is in a natural reserve with a rich diversity and variety of flora and fauna.

##### **The ascent to Nevado Cayambe**

This mountain is a well kept secret, because its ascent route is as nice as Cotopaxi but we’ll find way less mountaineers in our way up. Just as the other nevados in Ecuador, the path to the summit of **Nevado Cayambe** is abundant with beautiful cleavages, nevertheless the ascent is not very technically demanding.

##### **About Cayambe**

Nevado Cayambe (5790 m) is the third highest peak in Ecuador and its summit is **the highest in the Andes north of the Equator**.  
It is located in the _Pichincha_ province, approximately 70 km northeast of Quito. It is one of the volcanoes in the _Cordillera Real_, the same mountain range of Cotopaxi.

##### **I propose to you the following itinerary:**

**Day 1**. From Quito to Cayambe Refuge (4600 m).

**Day 2**. From the refuge to Cayambe Summit (5790 m), then back to Quito.
