The north of **Norway** is known for the impressive **Lyngen Alps,** close to **Tromsø**. Nevertheless the **Troms area** offers a lot more for skiers than just the Lyngen peninsula.

You can choose your ski touring area from a variety of interesting places in Troms, from valleys to islands. They all have their own special taste but the common factor is high quality ski touring in a beautiful landscape, generally with views of a fjord and the sea.

Here are just a few of these brilliant spots:

**– Tromsø:** The perfect basecamp for ski touring in the surounding areas.

**– Stor Hollendaren:** 1100m ski touring directly from sea level. To descend, you can choose steepeness variation up to 40°. From the summit a view opens up to the Ocean.

**– Storstolpan:** Around 1000 m ski touring to the last peak of the island. Incredible views from the summit of the Ocean.

**– Stortinden – couloirs:** Steep and narrow couloirs on the west end of Malangen Peninsula. Great views of the fjord.

**– Blabaertinden:** a classic touring mountain in Tamokdalen, known for its powder snow. Great steep variant descents on the east side.

**– Daltinden:** 1500 m ski tour in the majestic Lyngen peninsula. Descent to wards the north via vast skiable slopes. A good alternative is the round trip ascending the mountain from the southeast.

**Alta is located in Finnmark, Norway. It's the "city of the northern lights". In fact, people travel all the way up north to observe them. However, going up to 70° north in mid December is still an unusual plan for skiers. It wasn't easy to discuss it with the locals, but we managed to do it and we have no regrets!**

It's during this period, the darkest of the year, that ski touring in northern Norway becomes such a unique experience.

Up there, in December, there is a very special light. In fact, it's not dark all of the 24 hours. During part of the day, an unusual blue lights gives a new life to the environment.

**Everything looks both unreal and sharp: the mountains, the fjords, the ocean. Indeed, this vision is beyond what you can imagine.**

And when it's truly dark, the time comes to ski with our headlamps on. There are very strong headlamps that will allow you to ski easily and having fun in the dark.

**Discover the remote and wild region of Spitsbergen (Svalbard) in this 11-day trip hiking in this Arctic region.**

The starting point of this adventure is **Longyearbyen**, in **Svalbard, Norway**. From there we’ll sail on the Polaris, a yacht that will take us to the northwest part of **Spitsbergen**.

This almost unexplored region is the largest island on the Svalbard archipelago and the only one which is inhabited. Tourism is not common in this virgin land.

The Polaris will be our comfortable home during the trip and it will help us to move every day searching for new areas and remote locations.

We will navigate mostly in calm sea or sheltered waters. Our yacht will take us from fjord to fjord along the ice, providing the opportunity of discovering beautiful landscapes.

According to the regulations of this region, we have to take into account the presence of bears looking for food. Because of this, we can only walk there in an organized group.

One of the highlights of this trip are definitely the stunning polar landscapes. We’ll have access to the wildest places with zodiacs to observe wildlife, discover **Spitsbergen** national park and the Arctic desert.

Besides we’ll cross the 80th parallel if the weather conditions allow it. And, of course, we’ll enjoy the comfort and the excellent French table aboard the Polaris.

This is a unique trek-cruise in **Spitsbergen.**  Actually, all the members of the crew are experts in polar travel and have completed the “Ifremmont” training.

Flight France – Oslo. Possible Overnight at hotel.

The trip begins in the Norwegian town designated as the capital of **Svalbard.** You’ll find all the conveniences of a modern town, located in a fantastic Arctic landscape.

The history of **Longyearbyen** is that of a mining town and the heritage of the first mine can be observed.

Boarding the ship anchored in port. Equipment towards the northwest, this area is dotted with islands, fjords and beaches with a long history of exploration.

When Willhelm Barentz discovered Svalbard in 1956, it was the land he noticed first. The name he gave to this new land was Spitzberg, reflecting the steep, imposing mountains of the region. Anchorage in the **Bay of Tryghamna.**

Flight Oslo – Longyearbyen.

Ascent of **Knuvlen** (333 m), dome among the ice. Our first hiking sets the mood of this colorful country. Here abound reindeer and polar foxes dens, where the cubs don’t hesitate to come see hikers. Anchorage in **Bloomstrand.**

In the morning, landing in the north of the **island of Blomstrand.**

Ascent of the **Irgensfjellet** summit at 387 meters, splendid view of the 3 crowns, then crossing on the south shore where Polaris will pick up the group.

Discovery of the old marble mine dated from the beginning of the century, and observation of the skuas which nest there. We can observe polygonal soils. Sailing to the bay of the king and anchorage in **Ossian Sarsfjellet.**

Landing on the beach of **Ossian Sars Fjellet** island, a bird reserve.

Easy hike to the colony of kittiwakes and guillemots; you can get very close. The hike continues towards the **Kongsbreen glacier**, in the middle of a colorful tundra. We admire the glacial lakes and the **Kongsbreen** (Kings Glacier) with its three nunataks (peaks rising through the ice) Nora, Dana and Svea – in reference to the three Scandinavian countries.

It is in the south of **Raudvika** that we will find the zodiacs.

Anchorage in **Magdelaine bay**, the whalers holy patroness.

From there, we start looking for the bears before approaching them by sea. Landing in zodiac  to observe a walrus colony basking on a sandy beach with a great view of **Gullibreen glacier.** A walk along the beach and on the moraine offer a view of the **Calving glacier.**

Back aboard the Polaris and sail towards the northwest islands **Indre Norskoya.** It’s difficult to imagine a more inhospitable coast. Almost everywhere the mountains descend steeply to the sea.

Amongst the 7 glaciers, only the largest reach the sea by their ice front and following their generalized withdrawal, more bands of moraine are formed among these strips of ice and ocean. Anchorage in **Sallyhamna.**

Indre Norskoya / Sallyhamna

Ascent of the **Indre island peak,** at 257 meters, dominated by cairns built by whalers in the XVII century. In this part of the trip, we are located at 79 ° 52 ‘north latitude.

We will approach a puffin colony that nests in cliffs near the summit plateau. Many common eiders and barnacle geese on the shore. Then we move beyond the 80.2 north latitude, we anchor the Polaris using ice screws (if conditions allow) and in an  emotional sequence “we walk on the ice” and climb a hummock! Anchorage in **Hamilton bay.**

This is where we are most likely to meet polar bears. And every year, one of them spends time with us looking for food. We might observe polar bears before landing on the **Alicehamna beach.**

Long hike on the  **Solanderfjellet summits**, at 333 meters and descent along the ridge.

The summit viewpoint offers a vast panorama of the mountains of **Spitsbergen** and their wonderful world of ice.

Aboard the polaris we head south to enter the **Krossfjorden** and anchorage in **Lillehoofjorden** at **Signehamna Bay.**

After climbing over the bay, this time, it is aboard the Polaris that we will cover the front of the **Lillehook** **glacier** and its giant seracs on several kilometers.

Anchorage in **July 14th bay** (Fjortende Julibukta) and walk on the  July 14th glacier will allow us to see seals sunbathing on an iced deckchair.

**Reppingen**  ascent at 612 meters, a great day, an unforgettable arctic experience. Anchorage in **Prince Karls.**

Great crossing of the island from west to east: this multi colored tundra landscape is very different from the last days. The field is often soft and spongy and brings an even wilder atmosphere to these magical lands. And return to **Longyearbyen** on our last night on the archipelago.

##### **Join me for an incredible polar expedition, spending five days on the ice of the Arctic tundra of Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago.** 

This short expedition is an ideal first step for those who are planning to travel to the geographical pole, practice winter hiking in the High Arctic Alpine mountains or crossing the Greenland icecaps.

You will get invaluable experience in the ice as well as the priceless opportunity of exploring a destination far from the beaten tracks.

**Svalbard** is an archipelago in northern **Norway,** in the **Arctic Ocean**. Frozen fjords and high peaks are part of the stunning landscapes that you can see in this remote ice fields.

On the first days of our expedition, you’ll need to acclimatize to the new environment. You will also learn how to improve your snowshoeing technique, in order to travel safely in the Arctic conditions.

Besides, I will share some of my experiences too, like rituals for setting up a camp or how to get dressed in a freezing weather.

During the day, you will pull pulks to transport your personal stuff. By night, we’ll sleep in tents under the stars.

This is a complete polar experience that will allow you to enjoy all the wonderful things that polar travel has to offer.

Furthermore, you don’t need to have previous experience in winter camping to be a part of it, as this is a beginner’s program. You just need to have motivation and a good physical condition.

We gather in Oslo and fly together to Longyearbyen in the evening.

A little after midnight we arrive at the airport in the largest settlement of the island of Spitsbergen and we take a transfer to the hotel. There they are waiting for us and we can enjoy a good night’s sleep.

After a cozy breakfast we start the preparations.

Together with the guide we take the route, the course of the mini-expedition and the safety guidelines. Everyone’s personal clothing and collective equipment will also be checked. We store supplies, distribute our daily rations and learn how to store everything in the trays as economically as possible. If possible we will make a first test trip on the frozen Adventalen fjord. We set up the tents, learn how to organize the tent inside and make the final practical arrangements.

Preparation day

After getting the rifle and the fuel for the cooking fires, we prepare for the mini-expedition.

The route has been drawn on map. In the coming days we will be pulling snowshoes, pulling a pulka, through the vast snow and mountain landscapes. We live on the ice. The physical effort is not too high, we walk around 6 hours every day, converted about 15 km. We do not go ‘in the red’ and take every member of the team into account. Gradually we learn to deal with the freezing temperatures and how best to act to make it comfortable. The daily rhythm also allows to fully enjoy the Arctic environment.

On day 7 we return to Longyearbyen. The pulkas are discharged and we enjoy a well-deserved shower.

In the evening we relax and look back on the unforgettable adventure of the past days.

Early in the morning we say goodbye to all the warm and hospitable people we met in Spitsbergen and take the bus to the airport in Longyearbyen.

We got 3 comfortable chalets, a ski touring boat, wood fired saunas, jacuzzi and a great location for skiing in Lyngen and surrounding islands.**

My team of IFMGA mountain guides an I will guide you around the area, one of the best ski touring spots in the world. The possibility of skiing new mountains every day during your stay makes for an extremely varied outdoor experience.

I particularly enjoy living and guiding in the Lyngen Alps. If I had to summarize the ski experience in Norway in a few words, I would say: **Fjords, midnight sun, untouched powder ski runs, great boat journey, relaxing and comfortable lodging**.

A mountain guide will take up to 8 clients with him (although we recommend a maximum of 6 people per guide, so you can have a more personalized experience). One of the main advantages of doing backcountry skiing in the Lyngen Alps is the diversity of the terrain. It is suitable for all levels of skiers, beginners as well as experienced ski tourers.

The best time for skiing in the Lyngen Alps of Norway are the month of March and April because it is cold (around -2 and – 10°), we can enjoy the mythic northern lights and the days are long in terms of daylight. In April, the temperatures are getting warmer but it remains a great period to enjoy powder snow. During the month of May, the days become endless which can make the ski experience even more unique.

You will find below a standard ski touring program that could be adapted based on your schedule and your wishes. A typical week usually starts on a Saturday.

It’s time now to go a little bit further. We use the boat to transport the team to some of the best spots of the Lyngen Alps, where the conditions are the best, far from the crowd.

If you truly love skiing, then you've probably dreamed of skiing in **northern Norway.** During this amazing 6-day ski tour in **Finnmark,** we'll explore the most amazing slopes **surrounded by fjords** and almost reaching the sea with our skis.

The **Lyngen Alps** are the most popular ski destination in Norway, but they are perhaps a little too popular nowadays. If you are looking to discover a wilder area, beautiful and with great snow, Finnmark is the right place for you!

I've been skiing and organising trips in different Norwegian regions since 2008. The focus has always been the same: **finding great spots with few skiers!** I always choose lesser-known destinations where I have friends who can make the trip as special as possible.

Finnmark is a region of mountains and fjords that is a 3-hour drive away from the renowned Lyngen. For beginner ski tourers, the options from easy to moderate terrain are many, always with great sea landscapes. More advanced terrain is also available, of course. In Finnmark, you'll find 4 different fjords within a 30 min drive, which provides a great diversity of views and terrain!

I have planned a truly amazing trip for you. Not far from the Lyngen Alps, but far from the crowds! You can set up your own private group (max 6 persons per guide) or join a group of other people who have already registered with me.

We will be staying in a comfy house in the heart of a nice and small village. A fjord is just nearby. A new adventure awaits every day as we'll be only a short drive away from different skiing spots. We can also take fishermen boats and sea kayaks (weather allowing) to get to the base of the slope.

There are numerous options to choose from when skiing. Easier or steeper slopes, short trips or longer days, tree skiing, couloir skiing or even glacier skiing. We'll choose a different option for you each day but there is one thing you can count on: breathtaking settings! Picure huge fjords, the sea meeting the horizon and charming little villages. I can also easily organise fishing in the fjords or dogsledding tours if you like!

All levels are welcome. It's a region of many possibilities, and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for. Take into account that we will be walking from 2 to 5 hours every day, so a good fitness level is required.

The region of Finnmark is located 200 km east of Lyngen. Ski touring in Finnmark (Alta) is about wilderness, powder snow, breathtaking views and solitude: a dream spot for skiers. Mix Ski touring with kayaking, biking, dog sledding and have a one-week nordic adventure.

The spot where we ski is on the western part of Finnmarkskollektivet, a huge area with very few skiers. Because this spot is still less popular than Lyngen, accommodation is cheaper than around Tromso.

The mountains are 1200m high tops. During our 6-day ski tour, we will generally start from sea level and, with the long days in April, we will be able to do many different peaks in a week. It's often possible to ski two peaks a day if you've got the stamina.

We will stay in a big house close to the water, and use different means of transportation (cars, ferries, boats or sea kayaks) to approach our day's ski playground.

At the airport of Alta where I will come and pick you up. During our ski tour, we will be based in Langfjordbotn, 1.5-hour drive from Alta airport.

Together with me it is possible to make magnificent traverses from one beach to another taking in summits en route surrounded by raw nature and breathtaking scenery.

**Lyngen northern Norway** is paradise for hikers, trekkers and walkers and I confidently assure you the only other groups you will encounter on your travels will be reindeer, moose or ptarmigan.

You can walk for a day or afternoon and combine with a other activities during your stay.

Hiking in the Lyngen Alps in Norway

The Svolværgeita (also known as 'The Goat') is an iconic granite tower at the heart of Lofoten, in Svolvær. It's not only a symbol but also a top climbing destination, with multi-pitch routes for beginners and advanced climbers.

Everyone visiting Lofoten Islands, in Norway, agrees that Svolværgeita is the highlight of their trip. In fact, the views from the summit are stunning, making the climb worth the effort.

I've designed this adventure as a half-day trip. It begins with a trip briefing at the Sherpa stairs. Once that's done, we begin with a pleasant forest trek towards the mountain which will allow us to talk about the plants in the area, and catch sight of the city. Finally, the actual climbing begins.

We will climb the goat in two rope lengths, and have the chance to rest halfway. During the last stretch of our climb, we will go up on the big horn. The view is fantastic and from there, if you are brave, you can go over to the little horn. Otherwise, you can return to the ground and, once we have all descended, then we can go back to the town together.

The climb is steep and can be challenging for many. We help you with tight ropes, climbing tips, and advice. But the actual climbing you have to do yourself. It will be well worth it, Svolvergeita is so iconic that it is even a wedding spot.

The total tour time is around 3 to 5 hours. You must be at least 15 years old to join, and we will go in groups of a maximum of four people. Additionally, we will also provide the necessary equipment.

We will meet at the parking lot of the Sherpa stairs in Lofoten. To get to Lofoten, you can fly into Svolvær with SAS or fly to Evenes with Norwegian or SAS. The cheapest is to fly to Evenes but you'll have to drive for 2.5 hours to get to Lofoten. This is a beautiful drive so if you arrive in the daylight it's a plus.

Climbing Svolværgeita in the Lofoten

Join me for an **8-day ski touring trip** in the incredible **Lofoten** Islands, in the North of Norway. This archipelago, inhabited since 800 AD, offers a **landscape of steep mountains with sharp peaks rising from the North Sea, split by deep fjords, and scattered with picturesque and colourful fishermen villages**.

Although located north of the Arctic Circle, the warm waters of the Gulf Stream provide pleasant temperatures, similar to the Alps. Each day we will explore a different fjord and enjoy amazing descents on the wild slopes of the **Lofoten**.

Each islet of the archipelago offers myriads of different runs, from wide slopes to rocky couloirs, through forests, finishing on beaches. Starting from sea level, the ascents range between **600 to 1200 m vertical drop.**

This trip is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the warm welcome of the inhabitants of these beautiful islands. We will cross between the islands by boat while we admire the stunning landscapes of amazing peaks falling into the sea. Not to mention the lively bars of the village of **Svolvær**!

**The program**

We can meet in **Oslo** on Saturday night for dinner and overnight at the hotel. Or we can either meet on Sunday morning directly at Oslo Airport, for the flight that will take us to **Svolvær**.

We will spend 3 nights on **Austvågøy, one of the biggest islands of the archipelago.** The next 4 nights, we will stay in a comfortable lodge on an **islet of the Vestfjord**. On Monday morning, we return to Svolvær to take the flight back to Oslo.

It will be great 8 days of skiing, from Sunday morning to Sunday evening. We will enjoy a fantastic ski touring week along the protected fjords of the southeast coast.

At the beginning of the week, we will go on a Star Trek on the main summits of **Austvågøy**. Each morning, the Zodiac will take us to different fjords, with an elevation of **500 to 1000 m**, that reduces the effort of the climb.
