Description

Climbing Mount Olympus is a unique experience that will bring you closer to Greek culture while also allowing you to enjoy the beautiful wilderness. On this 3-day tour, we will have the chance to climb to the summit of Skolio, the second-highest peak in the massif. Alternatively, we also have the choice of climbing to the top of the highest peak, Mytikas.

Although both options are available, the first involves an easygoing hike, and the second a slightly more demanding climb with scrambling for which you will need to use more technical equipment that we will provide. Either way, in the evening you will enjoy a beautiful dinner under the starry sky with views of the throne of Zeus.

Throughout the tour, we will make sure to make your safety and enjoyment a top priority. We will also climb in small groups. You will need to be fit, but no prior climbing experience is required.

Itinerary

Day 1: Hike to Refuge A

Our adventure begins with flexible meeting options for all participants. You can join our organized transfer from Athens or Thessaloniki, or meet us directly in the center of Litochoro at 13:00. After a brief welcome, we drive to Prionia, the starting point of our hike.

From Prionia, we follow the well-known international E4 trail as we make our way up to Refuge A. The hike usually takes about three hours, but we move at a comfortable pace with regular breaks to rest, enjoy the scenery, and take in the peaceful surroundings of Mount Olympus.

We arrive at Refuge A around noon, where you can settle in before enjoying a satisfying dinner. Relax with a glass of wine and take in the calm mountain atmosphere. Wi-Fi is available, so you’ll have the chance to share your first photos and update friends and family about the day’s adventure.

Day 2: Mytikas Summit or Profitis Ilias & the Muses Plateau

The day starts early with a 7:00 AM wake-up call to make the most of the experience. After breakfast at the refuge, we prepare for the highlight of the trip: climbing to the summit of Mytikas (2,918 m), the highest peak in Greece. The final section involves an exciting 300-meter scramble through a steep gully, gaining about 200 meters in elevation. Equipped with helmets, harnesses, and ropes, and guided by our experienced team, you’ll safely reach the top. The breathtaking views from the legendary “home of the gods” make the effort truly worthwhile.

If you prefer a different route, you can hike to the peak of Profitis Ilias (2,800 m), which also offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Both options provide a strong sense of achievement and a memorable connection with the mythic landscape of Olympus.

After reaching the summit or alternative peak, we continue along the Zonaria trail toward the beautiful Muses Plateau. Surrounded by dramatic alpine scenery, we spend the night at a mountain hut. In the evening, enjoy dinner while the impressive Throne of Zeus rises above you and the night sky fills with stars—an unforgettable mountain experience.

Day 3: Descent to Gortsia

On the final day, we descend via a different route so you can experience even more of Mount Olympus. One of the highlights is the Laimos ridge, offering remarkable views in every direction. Along the way, we stop at the Petrostrouga refuge for a light lunch and a well-deserved rest.

As we continue downward, the landscape gradually changes from the alpine zone to dense forests of beech and fir trees. Eventually, we reach Gortsia, where our hike comes to an end. From there, we transfer back to Litochoro, marking the conclusion of an unforgettable three-day Olympus adventure.

What people are saying about Hiking Greece

Overall was good. Several things can be improved: 1. Match the price if possible on your site with the one on explore-share. 2. As 95 % of the group go to Mitikas, it makes sense not to charge additional tax for it, but include it in the package. It was also not very clear for me that this is not included in the package. 3. In explore share provide a list of items that we need to bring. Those are small things that can be improved - overall it was great experience, which I highly recommend to everyone.

All was well organized. The guides took care for everything

Vagelis was a great friendly guide tailoring the hike to our higher ability. He also provided us with loads of information about the local peaks/walks, history and hiking culture. He kept us hydrated and safe on the mountain. Hiking Greece was quick to respond to emails and was very professional. They could do with providing a bit more information on what to take and route without having to be promoted. Highly recommend.
