Itinerary

Day 1: Litochoro - Prionia - Spilios Agapitos Hut

Our journey begins in the morning around 10:00 AM at Litochoro’s central parking lot, where we’ll meet and complete a quick equipment check and trip briefing. From here, we’ll drive to Prionia (1100m), the trailhead, which is about 20-30 minutes away by car.

Once at Prionia, we’ll start our hike towards Spilios Agapitos Refuge (2100m), the most frequented hiking path on Mount Olympus and part of the famous E4 European trail. The trail is in good condition, passing through a shady forest as we ascend steadily. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by towering Bosnian pine trees, offering an impressive sight as we make our way to the refuge.

This section of the trek covers a 5.5 km distance, with an altitude gain of approximately +1000m, and should take us around 3 - 3.5 hours to complete. Upon reaching the hut, we’ll enjoy a warm meal, relax, and prepare for summit day.

Day 2: Summit Day

Summit day begins early—we’ll start before dawn, equipped with headlamps to witness the stunning sunrise as we make our way toward the summit.

Leaving the refuge, we’ll follow the E4 trail, which leads us out of the forest and into the alpine zone. This section of the trail is relatively steep but well-trodden and offers breathtaking views of the entire eastern region of Olympus. After approximately 2 hours, we’ll reach Skala peak (2866m), where we’ll stop for a gear check and put on helmets and climbing harnesses before continuing toward the summit.

From Skala, we’ll have clear views of Skolio Peak (2911m), Agios Antonios Peak (2815m), and, of course, the majestic Mytikas summit (2918m). Our final stretch will involve following the Kakoskala ridge, where we’ll experience easy scrambling for about 1 hour. We’ll be roped to the guide for safety as we climb to the summit of Mytikas—the highest point in Greece!

After spending time at the summit for photos and rest, we’ll begin our descent back to the refuge, retracing our steps along the same route. This portion of the climb involves 1000 meters of vertical gain and loss, covering approximately 5.5 km, and should take around 6 hours in total.

Once back at the hut, we’ll rest, enjoy a light lunch, and then proceed on our final descent to Prionia. The return journey to Prionia takes about 2 hours and covers approximately 6 km with 1000 meters of vertical descent.

We’ll drive back to Litochoro, completing the adventure with an unforgettable experience!

In high mountain environments, weather can sometimes change rapidly, creating challenging or potentially dangerous conditions. In such cases, your guide’s primary responsibility is your safety. The guide will take all necessary actions to ensure the group’s safe return.

If the guide determines that conditions are unsafe to proceed, an alternative itinerary may be implemented. This decision will be based on the guide’s judgment and expertise to prioritize safety above all else.

What experience do I need to have? How fit do I need to be? Is this program suitable for children or older people?

Experience:

No prior climbing or mountaineering experience is required to join this program or even to reach the Mytikas summit. However, familiarity with uphill hiking will make the experience more enjoyable.

Fitness Level:

A relatively good level of fitness is essential to fully enjoy this adventure and avoid unnecessary strain. On average, you should feel comfortable hiking uphill for 5 to 8 hours with breaks. Climbing Mount Olympus, especially the Mytikas section, can be physically demanding, so preparing with regular physical activity beforehand is highly recommended.

Suitability for Children or Older Adults:

This program is generally not recommended for younger children or individuals with limited mobility or previous injuries. Older participants are welcome as long as they have maintained a strong fitness level and are confident in their hiking abilities. Those who prefer less strenuous activity may choose to focus on exploring the mountain's scenic trails rather than reaching the summit.

With proper preparation and a positive mindset, this adventure can be an unforgettable experience for participants of varying skill levels.

How can I get to the trailhead/meeting point?

Our meeting point is at Litochoro's central parking lot, conveniently located near the town’s central square. A detailed location pinpoint will be shared with you prior to the meeting to ensure you can find it easily.

From there, your guide will take care of transportation to the trailhead. The drive to the starting point (Prionia) takes approximately 20–30 minutes and will be provided in your guide's vehicle, which is included in the price of the tour.

Rest assured, all logistical details will be communicated in advance to make your journey seamless and stress-free.

What health related issues do I need to consider?

Your health and safety are our top priority. Please take the following into consideration before booking this trip:

Musculoskeletal Issues:

If you suffer from any injuries or chronic conditions affecting your knees, joints, or other parts of the musculoskeletal system, this trek may not be suitable for you. Consult your doctor to determine whether it’s safe for you to participate.

Chronic Health Problems:

Individuals with chronic health conditions, such as heart problems, should avoid this trip unless cleared by their doctor. The physical demands of the hike may pose a risk.

Fear of Heights (Acrophobia):

The final part of the climb to the summit involves scrambling on steep but manageable terrain. Safety equipment, including a helmet, rope, and harness, will be used. However, if you have acrophobia or a fear of heights, this section could be particularly challenging and may worsen your condition.

Disclosure of Medical Conditions:

It is essential to inform your guide of any illnesses, medical conditions, or other health issues before the trip. Failure to disclose such information may result in adjustments to the itinerary or, in certain cases, the cancellation of the trip if the guide determines that continuing poses a risk to your health or the safety of the group.

What is the best way to get to Litochoro?

Litochoro, the gateway to Mount Olympus, is easily accessible by various modes of transportation:

By Car:

Litochoro is conveniently located near the E75 highway. If you’re driving from Athens, it’s approximately a 4.5-hour drive (around 420 km). From Thessaloniki, the drive is shorter—about 1 hour (90 km). Free and paid parking options are available in Litochoro, making it a convenient choice for those traveling by car.

By Train:

The nearest train station is in Litochoro, located 5 km from the town center. Trains run frequently from Athens and Thessaloniki via the main railway line. From the station, you can take a taxi or local bus to reach the town.

By Bus:

Intercity buses (KTEL) operate regular routes to Litochoro from both Athens and Thessaloniki. The buses stop at the Litochoro town center, making it a straightforward option for travelers.

By Air:

The nearest airport is Thessaloniki International Airport (SKG), about 100 km away. From the airport, you can rent a car, take a train, or use a bus to reach Litochoro.

Whichever option you choose, Litochoro is well-connected and serves as an excellent starting point for your Mount Olympus adventure.

Where do we sleep in the refuge?

Spilios Agapitos Refuge is a well-organized and clean mountain refuge, designed to provide a comfortable stay for hikers. Accommodation is in bunk beds within shared rooms that can accommodate 8 or more people.

Blankets are provided by the refuge, but you may choose to bring your own sleeping bag if you prefer. For a lighter option, a silk liner is recommended. Please note that a bed sheet is mandatory for your stay (available for purchase at the refuge if needed).

Bathrooms and restrooms are shared among guests, and showers are available; however, there is no hot water. Despite the simplicity of the facilities, the refuge offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for resting after a day of trekking.

Where can I leave my extra luggage?

You can usually arrange with your hotel to store your extra luggage during the trek. Most hotels are happy to accommodate this request.

If that’s not an option, you’re welcome to leave your luggage in the trunk of my car. Please note, however, that the car will be parked in an unsecured public parking lot, and I cannot take responsibility in the unlikely event of theft or damage. For added peace of mind, consider bringing only essential items or securing valuables elsewhere.

Which refuge are we staying at? How is it organized? Who will book it?

We primarily stay at Spilios Agapitos Refuge A, located at an elevation of 2,100 meters. This is the largest and most popular refuge on Mount Olympus, strategically situated along the well-traveled E4 trail, making it an ideal stop for hikers. The refuge offers dormitory-style accommodations, shared bathrooms, and a welcoming dining area (with a balcony!) where you can relax and enjoy hearty meals and drinks after a day on the trail.

All booking arrangements are managed by me, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience. In the rare event that Spilios Agapitos Refuge A is fully booked for your requested date, we will explore alternative accommodations in one of the Plateau refuges. Rest assured, any changes will be communicated well in advance to keep you fully informed.

Can children join this trip?

Children aged 14 years and older are welcome to join with at least one of their parents, provided they meet specific criteria. For safety reasons:

Each guide can accompany one adult and one child. If you wish a second child to join, an additional guide will be required.

The child must possess a sufficient level of fitness to participate safely.

The guide will assess the child's physical capabilities and endurance on the first day of the trip. Based on this assessment, the guide will determine if the child is fit to proceed with the climb to the summit on the second day. This decision is final and non-negotiable, as safety is our highest priority.

If you agree to these conditions, please feel free to request this trip. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

How much water or food should I bring?

You don’t need to carry all the water for the trip with you, as this would make your backpack unnecessarily heavy and could negatively impact your experience. Typically, carrying 1.5–2 liters of water is sufficient. Once we reach the refuge, you can replenish your water reserves by purchasing bottled water (2.5 euros for a 1.5-liter bottle).

We recommend following a similar approach with food. The refuge kitchen offers a variety of meal options to meet different dietary needs, including vegan and vegetarian preferences. Bring only lightweight snacks or energy foods that you are accustomed to using during mountain activities. This will help keep your backpack as light as possible for a more enjoyable trip.

Stavros is a gem. He was an excellent guide from start to finish. He communicated with me regularly and effectively from the moment I made the reservation. He was helpful and provided useful information in advance of the hike. During the hike, he was a great source of information about Mount Olympus, and all the nuances of the course we would take. He took good care of me from the moment we met and until the very end when he dropped me off at my car. During the hike he made sure we maintained a great pace and exercised an appropriate level of caution to keep us both safe throughout. I cannot say enough good things about him and of the entire experience. I would make this hike with Stavros again and recommend the hike to any and all who want to visit the gods.

Elijah

Our guide was amazing and super informative, he helped us with any issues that came up. Additionally he taught us the history of the mountain and the surrounding areas. Would highly recommended booking with Stavros!

Mount Olympus Climb, Experience of a Lifetime! My daughter and I planned a vacation to Greece with the typical stops like Athens, Mykonos, etc. We also wanted to do something challenging and special, so we decided to climb Mount Olympus. However, we had no idea how to go about it. We booked Stavros through Explore-Share (payment was smooth and online) and it turned out to be the best and most memorable part of an amazing vacation. This two-day adventure is a must-do. Before the trip, Stavros was very responsive, answering all my questions about where to stay, what dates to choose, necessary equipment, and an overview of what to expect. On the first day, we met him in the charming town at the foot of the mountain, and he drove us to the start of the climb. We ascended 3,000 feet to an overnight refuge, which he had pre-booked for us. The next day began an early start to hike another 3,000 feet to the near-summit. Stavros timed the hike perfectly to avoid the fog. At the near-summit, we donned harnesses, helmets, and ropes (all supplied by him) to tackle the challenging rock formation leading to the summit. We are experienced hikers but novice climbers, and Stavros's calm demeanor and step-by-step instructions gave us the confidence to safely reach the top. Throughout the climb, we observed many other inexperienced groups struggling or turning back due to wrong supplies, bad timing, or taking unnecessary risks. Our little group of three succeeded, thanks to Stavros's expertise. We reached the summit, had a great time, and had everything we needed. Stavros was fantastic company throughout the journey - professional, courteous, knowledgeable, kind, and fun. We are still thinking and talking about this experience every day. It was truly a beautiful and unforgettable adventure. This trip was the highlight of our visit to Greece! Highly recommended!
