Join us for a warm, wild 4-day adventure to the gateway of the Mitre Peninsula — the southernmost expedition in Argentina. Walk through changing landscapes, share stories around the trail, and stand beside the historic San Pío Lighthouse as the sea stretches to the horizon.
Expect close wildlife moments, quiet beaches, and the kind of remote beauty that stays with you long after the trip ends. Ready to make the dream of reaching the edge of the world real?
Along the route, you will have the chance to experience the region’s rich wildlife, with possible sightings of dolphins, sea lions, whales, and a wide variety of bird species. You will also encounter historical traces of human presence, such as abandoned ranch outposts, which add a unique character to this remote and wild environment.
Designed for travelers with previous multi-day trekking experience, this itinerary is carefully planned to keep each day comfortable and enjoyable, with daily hikes of approximately 4 to 5 hours. This allows plenty of time to rest, take in the scenery, and fully experience the surroundings, making this expedition unique compared to many other demanding traverses. As with all journeys in Tierra del Fuego, the schedule may adapt to weather conditions, and having extra time each day greatly simplifies logistics and enhances safety.
The San Pío Lighthouse mini expedition is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Reaching this remote point is both a personal challenge and a lasting achievement — a dream fulfilled at the southern edge of the world.
Meeting point
Our expedition begins early in the morning in Ushuaia, where we travel by vehicle to the end of Route J, reaching the Moat outpost. After about two hours of hiking, we will ford the Chico River.
During this first day, we walk along the coastline, crossing forests and grasslands while following the Beagle Channel as it opens toward the Atlantic Ocean. After approximately four hours of hiking, we arrive at our first campsite, La Mesita.
The total distance covered is 8 km, with a positive elevation gain of 70 meters.
We start the day early with a good breakfast before setting off eastward, hiking up and down the region’s stunning green hills and observing marine wildlife along the way.
By mid-afternoon, we reach Casa Vieja, where we set up camp and prepare for the following day’s visit to San Pío Lighthouse.
The distance for the day is approximately 6 km, with a positive elevation gain of 100 meters.
We ascend through grasslands to an elevated trail that offers panoramic views of Cape San Pío and its lighthouse, marking the southernmost point of the Argentine Republic.
We approach San Pío Lighthouse to enjoy the dramatic cliffs below, where the calls of a sea lion colony can often be heard. In the afternoon, we return to camp, pack our gear, and hike back to La Mesita, where we spend the second night.
The day covers approximately 16 km, with a positive elevation gain of 150 meters.
We begin early in the morning and hike back toward Moat, completing the return journey in approximately two hours.

My guide, Micaela from Patagon agency was very knowledgeable and likeable. The three day trek covered everything from glacier and high mountains to the gentle walks in the forest and on the turf marshes. Gear, food and transfers were provided, we didn’t lack absolutely anything. I rarely hike with guides, but I thoroughly enjoyed this experience!

We were very pleased with our guides, and our overall experience. We were contacted two days before our trip and the team was very helpful getting us prepared. Transportation was a snap. Our guides, Sebastian and Marine, were kind, helpful, engaging and knowledgeable.

Sebastian was a great guide! We felt very safe and it was really fun getting to know him. We liked him so much we decided we would do a second trip while we are in town. If I ever come back to Ushuaia, I will definitely track him down for more trips
