Description

Fontainebleau is located just 60km away in Paris and boasts a stunning forest that is renowned for its cultural relevance, nature preservation, and amazing boulders. On this full-day trip, which can be shortened to a half-day or extended to more days, I will show you the best boulders for your skill level while helping you advance and connect with your surroundings.

Along with being a lot of fun, and wonderfully scenic, this adventure is also very educational.  If you are a beginner, I will spend a great deal of time sharing with you the basics keeping your safety and the preservation of the environment in mind. If you have prior bouldering experience, I will also help you improve on your existing skills and techniques ensuring that by the end of the trip you will be a better climber than you were when the trip started. I only offer private guidance, so my attention will be focused on you and on offering you a unique approach to the beautiful Fontainbleau forest.

I incorporate knowledge from the Feldenkrais method, which works on movement, posture, and breathing, to help improve your movement on the rocks. Additionally, I also aim at helping you connect with the natural environment of the forest and to take the necessary measures to preserve the rocks.

While this trip is open to people of all skill levels, due to its physical nature, participants should be in good physical condition.

Fontainebleau is one of the best places in the world to practice bouldering, and offers a different experience every time you visit, any time of the year. So If you would like to enjoy it for yourself, just send me a request. I look forward to guiding you!

FAQs

Before or after the guided session, can we rent crash pads to climb on our own?

Yes. You can rent crash pads at:

  • Karma climbing gym, Fontainebleau
  • S'Cape Fontainebleau sport's shop, Fontainebleau
  • Le Rempart climbing gym, Vert-Saint-Denis

For your guided day, your guide brings everything you need.

Where is the meeting point?

If you come by train, your guide will meet you at Fontainebleau-Avon or Bois-le-Roi station, which one depends on where you'll be climbing that day. Both are approximately 30 minutes from Paris Gare de Lyon on the Transilien R line.

If you come by car, you'll meet your guide close to the bouldering site, which he'll choose based on your level, wishes, and the weather conditions.

What should I bring?

  • Climbing shoes (if you have them)
  • Comfortable sports clothes suited to the weather
  • Water and snacks or lunch
  • A layer for the morning, the forest can be cool even in summer

Your guide brings the crash pads and chalk.

If you don't have climbing shoes, no problem, the Karma climbing gym is 2 minutes from Fontainebleau-Avon station and offers rental shoes (~€10). Your guide can stop there before the session.

Is it possible to come with children?

Absolutely, children are very welcome. In practice, we find that from age 6 upwards, kids have a great time and stay fully engaged throughout the session. Under 6 is possible, but attention spans can make it challenging after around 30 minutes.

Your guide will choose boulders based on each child's age, size, and level. Mixed-level families, one parent who climbs, kids who are beginners, or the reverse, are our most common group type and work extremely well at Font precisely because all levels coexist at the same spots.

How do I get to Fontainebleau from Paris?

Take the Transilien R line from Paris Gare de Lyon. You'll need a standard Île-de-France train ticket (Navigo pass, or a single journey ticket at €2.50 available via the Wallet app or at the station). The journey takes approximately 30 minutes, with trains running every 30 minutes.

Your guide will meet you at the station, no need to navigate the forest on your own.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Your guide checks conditions the day before and sends you a final confirmation. Weather in Fontainebleau can change quickly, so he won't make a call too far in advance. If the forecast is uncertain, he'll give you two options:

  • Take the risk together, with the understanding that the session may need to be cut short if conditions deteriorate
  • Reschedule to another day that works for both of you

If climbing becomes unsafe, the session will be cancelled and you'll be offered a reschedule or a refund in line with Explore-Share's cancellation policy.

Is it possible to book a multi-day programme?

Yes, we can organise 2 or 3-day bouldering programmes. Multi-day bookings are private and allow your guide to build a structured progression across the days. Get in touch to discuss dates and we'll put together a tailored proposal.

What's the best area to stay near Fontainebleau?

If you're staying overnight, we recommend the area between Bois-le-Roi and Fontainebleau, you'll find Airbnbs, hotels, and campsites. A few options our guides recommend:

  • Hotel Les Pléiades (Barbizon), charming, well located
  • La Musardière campsite (Les 3 Pignons)
  • Le Lido campsite (Moret-sur-Loing)

Travelling from Paris? Fontainebleau is only 30 minutes by train — many of our clients visit as a day trip.

Are the guides English-speaking?

Yes. Ivan and Leo, our two main guides for Fontainebleau, are both fluent in English and French. Sessions can be conducted entirely in English.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation: You can cancel at no cost within 48 hours of booking, provided your session is at least 30 days away.

Standard cancellation:

  • More than 60 days before: 100% refunded
  • 30–59 days before: 75% refunded
  • 21–29 days before: 50% refunded
  • Less than 21 days before: no refund

Weather cancellation: If your guide considers conditions unsafe, he'll propose an alternative date, a similar experience on the same day, or a cancellation. See the weather FAQ above for details.

For full terms, see Explore-Share's cancellation policy: https://www.explore-share.com/terms/

What level do I need for this experience?

No level required. Fontainebleau is one of the rare places in the world where complete beginners and experienced climbers (V8+) can climb side by side, often at the exact same spot. The boulders are naturally juxtaposed across all difficulty levels, which means your guide can set up several crash pads in the same area and have everyone climbing simultaneously, at their own level, without ever splitting the group.

If you climb indoors, your guide will translate your gym grade to Font grades and plan the day accordingly. V3/V4 in the gym? You'll be comfortable on yellow/orange Font circuits. Your guide will then progressively challenge you from there.

What will we actually do during the full day?

Your guide will meet you at the train station or close to the bouldering site if you come by car. The day starts with a warm-up on accessible boulders, incorporating movement awareness techniques to help you feel the rock naturally. From there, the programme adapts to your level and goals, working a specific circuit, attempting an iconic Font problem, or exploring a variety of styles (slabs, walls, overhangs). The session runs for approximately 6 hours.

Beyond the climbing itself, your guide will teach you the outdoor-specific skills that even experienced gym climbers don't have: how to spot properly, place crash pads, organise your session, and navigate the Font labyrinth independently in the future.

Is it possible to climb for a half-day instead of a full day?

The half-day (3 hours) is already a solid session, most climbers will be genuinely tired by the end. It's the ideal format for a first discovery or a classic session. The full day (6 hours) is for those who want to fully immerse themselves in the forest, more time to explore different spots, have a proper picnic lunch, and go deeper into Font at a relaxed pace.

Our guide for the day, Victor, was amazing. He brought us to some great climbs that had a variety of levels so everyone could enjoy the experience. My son was super excited to climb his first 7a. Thank you for the great experience! 5
Leo is the absolute best. Took me to climbs that are mixed of my strengths and weaknesses and shared techniques of how to best climb the routes. He’s strong so knowledgeable and best catches I’ve had!5
Our family had a great time with Leo -- he was an all-around fantastic guide. He knew Font so well, he was able to identify the best problems for our group, down to the individual. He was safety-conscious while also being laid back and fun-loving. He was really great with our 10yo and 12yo kids, who have a lot of climbing experience but can definitely still use support and pointers. And he was also great with me (a beginner) and my husband (an expert). On top of all of it, he was fun to climb with, and we all loved watching him get a problem he'd not sent before. A really great day!5

Léo made boldering in the forest accessible while also finding appropriate challenges for us. We had a great time and came away better climbers.5
I had a wonderful day of bouldering in Fontainebleau. Leo was absolutely brilliant with the kids! Thank you Leo :)5
We had a great day with Ivan. He picked a nice area for exploring bouldering at Font and he was good at pushing our boundaries in an empathic way.5
I was in Paris for a few days and really wanted to try bouldering at Fontainebleau, but since it was my first time and I didn’t have any friends to go with, I wasn’t sure how to make it happen. A quick Google search led me to Explore Share, and even before I booked anything, they were super responsive and helpful with all my questions.

On the day itself, my guide Ivan was amazing—he helped me read the routes, build trust in the footholds, figure out the beta, and even showed me how to downclimb safely. Overall, a fantastic experience and I’m so glad I went for it!5
We had an amazing time bouldering in Fontainebleau our guide went above and beyond. He made us feel very safe while climbing and was very nice. Would definitely recommend. Can’t wait to go back.5
