Meeting point
What level do I need?
None at all. The half-day is specifically designed to be accessible, whether you've never climbed outdoors before or you're a regular gym climber wanting your first Font experience. Your guide selects boulders suited to your level, and Fontainebleau's unique layout means climbers of very different abilities can climb side by side at the same spot.
V3/V4 in the gym? You'll be comfortable on yellow/orange Font circuits. Complete beginner? Your guide starts from scratch and makes sure you leave with real outdoor skills: how to read the rock, trust your feet on sandstone, use a crash pad, and move safely.
What happens during the 3 hours?
Your guide meets you at the station and takes care of everything from there. After a progressive warm-up, he selects the best boulders for your level and objectives, always adapting to the group on the day. Beyond the climbing itself, he shares the history and stories behind each spot, takes you to less crowded areas away from the tourist circuits, and teaches you the ethics and best practices for climbing in the forest responsibly.
Most climbers are genuinely tired by the end of 3 hours, it's a full session, not a taster.
Is it possible to join a group?
Yes, this is one of the few formats where you can join other climbers. The meeting point is at Bois-le-Roi station.
Punctuality matters: your guide cannot wait more than 10 minutes, the session starts on time for those who are there
Check the JOIN A GROUP section for upcoming dates.
Can I come with children?
Yes, from around age 6. Your guide chooses boulders based on each child's age, size, and level. Mixed groups, one parent who climbs, kids who are beginners, or any combination, work very well at Font. The forest's layout means everyone can climb simultaneously at the same spot without anyone waiting or getting bored.
Under 6 is possible but attention spans can make it challenging after around 30 minutes.
Where is the meeting point?
By train: your guide meets you directly at Fontainebleau-Avon or Bois-le-Roi station (he'll confirm which one the day before). No need to navigate the forest on your own.
By car: your guide shares the exact meeting point the day before, chosen based on your level, wishes, and weather.
How do I get there from Paris?
Take the Transilien R line from Paris Gare de Lyon, approximately 30 minutes, trains every 30 minutes. Standard Île-de-France ticket (€2.50, available via the Wallet app or at the station).
Fontainebleau is closer than many Paris suburbs. Most clients come as a morning trip and are back in Paris by early afternoon.
What should I bring?
Your guide brings crash pads and chalk.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Your guide checks conditions the day before and sends you a final update. Weather at Font can change quickly, so he won't call it too early.
If the forecast is uncertain, he gives you two options: take the risk together (session may be cut short if needed) or reschedule. If conditions are genuinely unsafe, you'll be offered a reschedule or a refund per Explore-Share's cancellation policy.
Good to know: the sandstone at Font dries quickly after rain.
What is the cancellation policy?
Can I rent crash pads to climb independently before or after?
Yes:
For your guided session, your guide brings everything.
Should I book the full day instead?
The half-day (3 hours) is ideal for a first discovery or a classic session, you'll be well tired by the end. The full day (6 hours) is for those who want to fully explore the forest, take their time, and have a proper lunch in nature. If you're unsure, the half-day is the right starting point. Ivan was excellent. 5 out of 5 stars.

It was such a fun experience, as beginners in just a few hours we got some really helpful tips to improve our bouldering in general, as well as a great explanation on how to navigate the Fontainebleau maze and confidence to boulder outside independently in future. Ivan obviously really cares about protecting the rocks and the forest environment, his enthusiasm and volunteering his time sets such a good example. Also it was really kind to help us with a good walking trail for after the session and make sure we set off on the right way.
