Located about 70 km southeast from Paris, Fontainebleau is one of the best bouldering destinations in the world. Join us for 1 or more days and discover this bouldering mecca in France with exciting options for everyone.
Bouldering is a style of rock climbing performed on small and low rock formations known as boulders, without using a rope or harness and falling on a mattress. It is rock climbing in its purest form!
The beautiful Fontainebleau forest boasts an impressive variety of sandstone rock boulders of fantastic quality**. It suits all abilities, styles and experience levels**. You will find from small and easier boulders for children and beginners to overhangs, slabs or aretes that are more challenging.
This world-class bouldering area attracts climbers from all over the world, with its vast amount of chaos or blocks (few meters high rocks) spread over the forest. Despite being a quite small area, you can spend months here and never climb the same boulder sector twice.
For one or more days, we will take you to several different bouldering areas so you can get a taste of the amazing variety of bouldering problems this beautiful forest has to offer. Whether you are looking to venture into this activity, improve your technique or challenge yourself with a harder bouldering experience, Fontainebleau has something for you.
During our time in Fontainebleau, we will help you with every bouldering aspect**, from safety to general climbing techniques** and everything you need to know to enjoy your experience and improve your skills. Please note you can climb in Fontainebleau year-round, although the best time is in spring and autumn.

Meeting point
What level do I need?
Whether you've been climbing indoors for 6 months or 6 years, Fontainebleau works for you. V3/V4 in the gym translates to yellow/orange circuits at Font, your guide will start there and build from that base. What surprises most gym climbers is that even at a solid indoor level, outdoor bouldering requires a completely different skillset: reading real rock, trusting your feet on sandstone, placing crash pads, navigating the forest. Your guide will teach you all of this, regardless of your level.
What will we actually do during the day?
Your guide meets you at the station or near the site if you come by car. After a warm-up on accessible boulders, the day adapts entirely to your group, working circuits, attempting specific problems, or simply exploring Font's iconic spots at your own pace. The full-day session runs approximately 6 hours.
Font is one of the rare places where beginners and experienced climbers can climb side by side at the same spot, your guide sets up crash pads across several boulders of different difficulties so everyone climbs simultaneously, at their own level, without ever splitting up.
Is this a good day trip from Paris?
Absolutely. Fontainebleau is 30 minutes from Paris Gare de Lyon on the Transilien R line, closer than many Paris suburbs. Most of the clients come as a day trip, arrive in the morning, and are back in Paris by early evening. No car needed, no overnight stay required. Your guide meets you directly at the station and handles everything from there.
How do I get there?
Take the Transilien R line from Paris Gare de Lyon toward Montereau or Nemours. Stop at either Fontainebleau-Avon or Bois-le-Roi (your guide will tell you which one the day before). Journey time: approximately 30 minutes. Trains run every 30 minutes.
Ticket: standard Île-de-France train ticket (€2.50 single, available via the Wallet app or at the station).
Coming by car? You'll meet your guide close to the bouldering site, easier and more flexible, especially for families.
Where exactly is the meeting point?
By train: your guide meets you at the station platform. No need to find your way into the forest.
By car: your guide shares the exact meeting point the day before, based on your level, wishes, and weather conditions.
What should I bring?
Your guide brings crash pads and chalk.
Can I bring children?
Yes, from around age 6, children have a fantastic time. Your guide selects boulders based on each child's age, size, and level. Mixed families where adults and kids climb at very different levels are welcome and work particularly well at Font, the forest's layout means everyone can climb simultaneously at the same spot.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Your guide checks conditions the day before and sends you a final update. If the forecast is uncertain, he'll give you two options: take the risk together (with the understanding the session may be cut short) or reschedule to another day. If conditions are unsafe, you'll be offered a reschedule or a refund in line with Explore-Share's cancellation policy.
What is the cancellation policy?
Can I rent crash pads to climb independently before or after the guided session?
Yes. Crash pads available at:
For your guided day, your guide brings everything.
Can we do a half-day instead?
Yes. The half-day (3 hours) is a solid session, most climbers will be tired by the end. It's ideal for a first discovery or a classic session. The full day (6 hours) is for those who want to fully explore the forest, take their time, and have a proper picnic lunch in nature. Details here: https://www.explore-share.com/trip/fontainebleau-rock-climbing-bouldering/
Is a multi-day programme possible?
Yes, we can organise 2 or 3-day programmes for those who want a deeper immersion. Get in touch and we'll build a tailored proposal.
Where should I stay if I'm spending the night?
We recommend the area between Bois-le-Roi and Fontainebleau. A few options our guides recommend:
That said, most clients visit as a day trip from Paris, 30 minutes by train makes it very easy.

We had a fantastic time on our guided day-tour of bouldering in Fontainebleau. I would highly recommend this experience, especially if you don't have a rental car, or if you want to maximize your limited climbing time in Fontainebleau. Our guide, Léo, was very fun and knowledgeable, helping with beta and finding interesting boulders of suitable difficulty (one girl in our group was far more advanced at climbing than the other 2 of us, and Leo was able to find bouldering areas where we could still be in close proximity to each other). He also brought some delicious homegrown strawberries from his own farm which was amazing and unexpected!

My teenage son and I spent two afternoons in April bouldering with our guide, Leo, in Fontainebleau. Leo was an excellent guide and teacher. He selected boulders that were both challenging and within our skill level. Leo also share fun information about the area we were bouldering in and gave helpful information to make sure we got to the right place at the right time. We highly recommend Leo and would gladly do another bouldering excursion with him.
