Meeting point
First, we'll start with a short briefing about the day's activities, safety guidelines, and bouldering basics. Equipment will be distributed, and I'll provide an overview of the bouldering routes available. Then, a warm-up session will prepare our muscles and minds for climbing. I’ll introduce basic bouldering techniques or offer advanced tips for experienced climbers.
It's time to hit the rocks! We will explore various bouldering routes suited to your skill level. Beginners will enjoy accessible climbs, while more advanced climbers can tackle challenging problems. The forest’s stunning scenery will make this a truly unique experience.
What level do I need?
No experience needed, and no ceiling either. Fontainebleau works for everyone from complete beginners to advanced climbers, often at the exact same spot. The sandstone boulders are naturally grouped by difficulty, which means your guide can adapt the entire session to exactly where you are today.
If you're coming from a gym, here's a useful reference: V3/V4 indoors translates roughly to yellow/orange circuits at Font. But more importantly, outdoor bouldering requires skills you simply can't develop in a gym, reading real rock, trusting friction on sandstone, moving efficiently on natural holds. Your guide teaches all of this, whatever your starting point.
Is this right for a first outdoor experience?
It's one of the best possible introductions to outdoor bouldering. Font is technically demanding, but that's exactly why a guide makes such a difference, it's much easier to enjoy the experience when someone selects the right problems for your level, shows you the subtleties of the rock, and shares the local knowledge that only comes from years in the forest.
95% of the clients are visiting Font outdoors for the first time. They all leave better climbers.
What will we do during the 3 hours?
After meeting at the station or near the site, your guide starts with a progressive warm-up. He then takes you to spots chosen specifically for your level and objectives, including less crowded areas that most visitors never find on their own. Each boulder has its own history and techniques; your guide shares the stories and local knowledge that only insiders know.
You'll work on climbing movement, learn how to read routes, practice safe spotting and crash pad placement, and discover how to navigate the Font labyrinth independently in the future. Three hours goes quickly, most climbers are tired by the end.
I'm travelling solo, can I join a group?
Yes, group half-day sessions starts at Bois-le-Roi station (30 min from Paris Gare de Lyon).
Check the JOIN A GROUP section for upcoming dates.
Can I bring children?
Yes, from around age 6. Your guide selects boulders based on each child's age, size, and level. Under 6 is possible but attention spans tend to drop after around 30 minutes.
Families with mixed levels, one parent who climbs, beginners, kids at different stages, are very welcome and work particularly well at Font.
Where is the meeting point?
By train: your guide meets you directly at Fontainebleau-Avon or Bois-le-Roi station (he confirms which one in advance). No need to find your way into the forest.
By car: your guide sends you the exact meeting point in advance, chosen based on your level, wishes, and weather conditions. Coming by car gives you more flexibility and opens up more of the forest.
How do I get there from Paris?
Transilien R line from Paris Gare de Lyon > Fontainebleau-Avon or Bois-le-Roi. About 30 minutes, trains every 30 minutes. Standard Île-de-France ticket (€2.50 via Wallet app or at the station).
No car needed. Your guide handles everything once you arrive.
What should I bring?
Crash pads and chalk: provided by your guide.
What happens if the weather looks bad?
Your guide checks conditions the day before and confirms with you. At Font, the sandstone dries quickly after rain, light drizzle rarely stops a session.
If the forecast is uncertain, he'll offer you two options: go for it together (with the understanding the session may be cut short if needed) or reschedule to another day. If conditions are unsafe, you get a reschedule or a refund per Explore-Share's cancellation policy.
What is the cancellation policy?
Can I rent crash pads to climb independently before or after?
Yes, Karma gym, S'Cape Fontainebleau, and Le Rempart gym (Vert-Saint-Denis) all offer crash pad rental.
For your guided session, your guide brings everything.
Should I book the full day instead?
The half-day (3 hours) is a complete session, you'll be well tired by the end and leave with real outdoor skills. The full day (6 hours) suits those who want to go deeper into the forest, explore more spots, and have a proper lunch break in nature. Not sure? Start with the half-day.
Where should I stay if I'm spending the night?
We recommend the area between Bois-le-Roi and Fontainebleau. Options our guides recommend:
Most clients visit as a day trip from Paris, 30 minutes by train makes it very easy.

Had a great day bouldering in Fontainebleau with Leo and would 100% recommend him. He's a strong climber, knows the forest inside out, and is a really good teacher — patient, clear, and easy to learn from. Super chill guy too, and he took the time to tailor the day to what we wanted instead of running a generic tour. If you're heading to Font, book Leo!

Bouldering with Léo was great. He is a highly experienced climber and knew how to adapt the adventure to my climbing level. Fontainebleau is a magical place for bouldering and the time went by too quickly.
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
