Easy mountain biking tour around the Xitle volcano (Ajusco range) near Mexico City, Half-day

Situated just south of the sprawling Mexico City urban area sits the picturesque and refreshingly green Cumbres del Ajusco National Park.

Among the minor summits surrounding the main volcano of Ajusco is Xitle and this will be our final destination. According to legend, the now-dormant volcano erupted nearly 2,000 years ago and buried the preeminent Mesoamerican city of Cuicuilco in ash.

Starting from another point within the national park, we will spend half of the day cycling to the summit of this small volcanic cone through some splendid scenery, and over where the city is rumored to have been located, before making the 300 meter ascent.

With grades between 30 and 40 degrees, the climb is quite easy, making this the perfect mountain biking experience for young children and first-time mountain bikers.

After enjoying some lovely views from the top, we will head back down and stop somewhere for lunch. There is no better way to finish off the day than with some fresh and local cuisine!
