Cerro Lopez is an emblematic mount of Bariloche. Let's conquer its surroundings in just one day!

The Cerro Lopez is 2075 meters high and it offers a great variety of routes up to the summit. Therefore, I would like to propose to you some alternative ways according to your level.

The first option consists in a challenging route known as the Palotinos Ridge. It is a 1-day trek adventure that requires some technical knowledge and training but it's an amazing experience you cannot miss.

Our itinerary starts in Bahía Lopez, a wonderful place surrounded by lakes and snowed peaks. We will walk by steep vertical cliffs that give us the necessary height to admire an amazing view of the Cerro Tronador, the Cerro Capilla and of course, the Nahuel Huapi Lake.

The hike continues while we are heading up to a magnificent peak of the Cerro Lopez known as Pico Turista, at 2039 meters. And after some pictures from such a viewpoint, we will start the descent across the route that people usually use to ascend to the peak. It is a long and snowy path, depending on the period of the year.

There is also another less difficult option to get to the Cerro Lopez summit. The route is called Goats Ridge and it is the traditional ascent trail. The way is beautiful and very interesting because of its vegetation, forests and birds like woodpeckers and condors.

We will hike and gain elevation quickly while enjoying the Moreno and Nahuel Huapi Lakes. It is a good place to have lunch before continuing ascending to the Extremo Encantado Hut.

During that way down, we will re-enter to the forest and be surprised by more wild fauna. The reward comes once at the hut, where we will enjoy a tasting dinner in front of a fireplace while we wait for the jeep to come and take us back the mountain base.

Whatever option you choose, you are doing the right thing. You cannot miss this full day trekking expedition in Cerro Lopez.

I will be waiting for your contact in order to plan together your best mountain experience!!!

About the guide

AAGM mountain guide from Argentina.

I was raised in Buenos Aires where I used to go sailing and fishing with my family during weekend and holidays. As a teenager I began traveling to Patagonia with friends to fish, hike and camp. Years later I became a rock climber and mountaineer since I wanted to asses more summits and amazing views.

At the age of 23 and after gathering a good amount of fun ascents and traverses along Patagonia, I decided to fully commit to a life in the outdoors. As a result I started my carrier at N.O.L.S. – National Outdoors Leadership School in the U.S.A. and Chile. I lead rock climbing and mountaineering trips in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Alaska and in Aysen (Chilean Patagonia) for nine years.

In 2009 finally settled permanently in Bariloche and focused my guiding work on the Lake District Region. Here I discovered new styles of guiding and service which were good to experience and helped me grow in this profession. Now I am able to mix my background on outdoor education with the guiding world and create unique experiences for active travelers.

I take advantage of every season of the year, going mountain biking and sea-kayaking in the summer, ice-skating on alpine lakes during the Fall, back-country skiing during the Winter, rock climbing and mountaineering as soon as the Spring makes it way through the snow.

November, 2022

Juan was a great guide. We went in mid November and there’s no way we could have done the Frey to Jacob traverse without him. He’s very relaxed but you feel very safe and unhurried, good fun to be around. He looked after us really well and even let us take a shower at his place before we headed off to the airport.
