Description

Start your advanced rock climbing career on the right foot by heading into Joshua Tree National Park and taking a lead climbing course! The two or three days of guided instruction is designed to give you practical skills to safely and efficiently lead your own ascents, build anchors, and so much more!

There is no better place to immerse yourself in rock climbing culture than Joshua Tree National Park. The 790,636 acre park in Southern California includes two deserts and their iconic ecosystems as well as numerous mountain ranges and unique flora and fauna. It has long been a prized destination for climbers and hikers because of its rare and rugged nature and bountiful outcropping.

Your step into the lead climbing community will begin here, entrenching yourself in this beautiful wilderness for two or three days to acclimate yourself to leading. We have years and years of experience in both climbing and guiding, so you can pick up crucial techniques, tips, and tricks that are vital to your educational growth.

You will cover a variety of climbing topics over two full days, including top rope set up, belay techniques, safety protocol, lead movement, and more. If you would like more time to train, we have a three day option as well.

Beginning early on the first day, we will head out from our office in Joshua Tree to a variety of great objectives to get you learning right away. Your first goal is to familiarize yourself with the equipment and its proper usage, from ropes and belays to actual top rope techniques. Following your comprehension of the skills, you can put your new acquired climbing abilities to the test on real ascents.

Our aim is to have you capably and safely leading easy, well-protected routes in Joshua Tree by the end of your program. We will keep safety as our number one priority, so you will gain confidence and remain comfortable while progressing to the next level of climbing.

You need to have some prior experience before taking this program – we recommend our Introduction to Rock Climbing Course. This also includes a strong physical fitness for multiple full days on the rock. Those who have the time can take the three day option for more quality time applying their skills to the rock.

Book this Learn to Lead Course in Joshua Tree National Park NOW and give yourself the tools to lead your rock climbing adventures safely and with confidence!

For those who want to focus on a specific skillset, we have a great one day top rope set up clinic in Joshua Tree with your name on it!

About the guide

guide profile img

Seth, the owner of Mojave Guides, has been a Joshua Tree resident since the Fall of 2003 to remain close to the National Park and its exceptional rock climbing.

His climbing career began about 12 years ago while living in Jackson Hole, WY. Obsessed from the beginning, he started to develop his skill set and gain experience the way good climbers do, by rock climbing!

By 2008 he had visited most of the famous climbing areas of the US and earned his first professional certification with the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA). Seth began his guiding career the same year, as a Trip Leader for Indiana Universities' Outdoor Adventures.

In 2010 he received an outdoor recreation and natural resource management degree from I.U. with a focus on rock climbing (yes, you can get a university degree for rock climbing!).

In 2013, following an intensive training period and subsequent 6-day exam, he was awarded the AMGA Rock Instructor Certification. This certification allows him to guide pretty much anything you want to climb in the park!

Today, Seth has worked with thousands of clients, from 5-year-olds to 75-year-olds through 10 different organizations based in 7 states.
