Rock climbing courses generally begin at the Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Center. Contact us upon booking for more information regarding your meeting location.
There are a variety of great hotels in the Joshua Tree area, and the close proximity to Palm Springs (45 minutes) also allows for a wide range of lodging options. Plan ahead and book early as reservations are often required and can fill up during busier seasons (spring and fall) – sometimes as early as a year in advance. Reservable sites within the park include Black Rock, Indian Cove, and Sheep’s Pass. Feel free to ask us for recommendations on lodging and food – we know the area like the back of our hand and are happy to share our expertise.
Be prepared to fill out paperwork upon arrival to the program. As you will be following the guide into the park, please come prepared with ample fuel to safely and efficiently begin the program.
Some suggested items to bring include:
- Water (none in the park, so bring enough for the whole trip)
- Sun protection (sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, hat)
- Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes
- Durable and comfortable hiking shoes
- Long pants
There is no cell phone service within the park.
Seth, the owner of Mojave Guides, has been a Joshua Tree resident since the Fall of 2003 to remain close to the National Park and its exceptional rock climbing.
His climbing career began about 12 years ago while living in Jackson Hole, WY. Obsessed from the beginning, he started to develop his skill set and gain experience the way good climbers do, by rock climbing!
By 2008 he had visited most of the famous climbing areas of the US and earned his first professional certification with the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA). Seth began his guiding career the same year, as a Trip Leader for Indiana Universities' Outdoor Adventures.
In 2010 he received an outdoor recreation and natural resource management degree from I.U. with a focus on rock climbing (yes, you can get a university degree for rock climbing!).
In 2013, following an intensive training period and subsequent 6-day exam, he was awarded the AMGA Rock Instructor Certification. This certification allows him to guide pretty much anything you want to climb in the park!
Today, Seth has worked with thousands of clients, from 5-year-olds to 75-year-olds through 10 different organizations based in 7 states.
