Mountain Climbing in Saas Grund: Top Outdoor Adventures Awaiting You

Located in the southern Swiss canton of Valais, Saas-Grund sits at the foot of some of Switzerland’s most iconic mountain peaks. Combining stunning mountain scenery with plenty of diverse options, the idyllic mountain town is the perfect starting point for a variety of great adventures.

Away from the two aforementioned trips, plenty of novice mountain climbers head to Saas-Grund each year to climb one of the many peaks on the Monte Rosa massif, which provides plenty of excellent challenges and stunning views for inexperienced mountaineers.

More experienced mountaineers may opt instead to head out on a 7-day sustained trek to and ascent of Mitschabel (4,545 m), the highest mountain solely in Switzerland. Involving ascents over both rock and ice, climbers are rewarded at the top by unparalleled great views over the Saas and Matter valleys.

Yet other climbers opt to head out on a multi-peak treks. Frequent combinations include the Lagginhorn (4,010 m) and Weissmeis; Allalinhorn (4,027 m) and the Weissmies; and the Weissmies, Alallinhorn and Bishorn (4,153 m).

Magnificent Matterhorn

As soon as the summer months begin to roll around, thousands of mountaineering enthusiasts set their sights on

climbing the Matterhorn. At 4,478 meters in elevation, it is one of the major draws for mountain climbers headed to the area. The iconic pyramidal peak is a great challenge for experienced climbers and boasts some of the best views in all of Switzerland.

Something for everyone

Regardless of your mountain climbing skill level or prowess, Saas-Grund offers something for everyone. Weismeiss (4,017 m) sits just east of Saas-Grund and is the perfect peak for first-time moutnaineers to experience. Meanwhile, more advanced climbers can look to a challenging but rewarding climb of the Matterhorn.

During the summer, average daily temperatures in Saas-Grud range from 10 ºC to 13 ºC. These drop dramatically as you gain in elevation. Summer is also the wettest time of year in Switzerland, receiving between 50 and 60 millimeters of rain each month.

Flying into Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) is a common starting point for any trip to Saas-Grund. From here, it is easy enough to rent a car and make the 2.5 hour drive or take a combination of trains and buses to get there. You could also fly into Sion (SIR) and drive or take the bus from there.
